📢 Net Zero Stocktake 2025 is now live. Our latest analysis confirms a defining trend: net zero targets remain a central feature of the global economy - despite policy reversals at the US national level. This year’s Stocktake provides a comprehensive global assessment of the quantity and quality of net zero commitments set by countries, regions, cities, and companies. 🔍 Key findings: 📉 Despite US federal backtrack, US subnationals and corporates hold the line -National-level net zero GDP coverage dropped from 93% to 77% following the U.S. federal reversal. -However, 19 U.S. states remain committed. -When included, global net zero coverage rises to 83% of GDP. 2.55 billion people are now covered by subnational targets — up from 497 million in 2020. 📈 Corporate target-setting continues to grow -70% of revenue in the Forbes Global 2000 ($36.6 trillion) is now covered by net zero targets. -U.S. companies with targets increased by 9% year-on-year, now representing $12 trillion in annual revenue (64% of the assessed total). -Over half of America’s largest firms now have net zero commitments. 🧩 Quality remains a critical gap -Just 7% of corporate targets meet basic integrity criteria — though the number has doubled in the past year. -Only 4% of cities and 6.5% of regions meet these same standards. -Nearly half (1,548 / 3,885) of assessed companies and subnational governments still lack any emissions reduction target. 🌿 Nature-based removals under scrutiny -Around one-third of companies with net zero targets plan to use nature-based carbon removals. -Only 4% have clear, separate targets for these removals — limiting transparency and accountability. In food and agriculture, the number of targets has remained stable. -Short-term targets are being dropped or delayed. Longer-term pledges — often aligned with the SBTi’s new FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture) guidance — are becoming more common. 📌 Takeaway: While net zero ambition remains widespread, implementation continues to lag due to only incremental increases in the integrity of commitments. As regulatory expectations evolve and climate impacts accelerate, the distinction between robust and superficial targets is becoming clearer — and more consequential. John Lang, Lead, Net Zero Tracker, said: “From the devastating LA fires to floods in Pakistan, 2025 has shown why reaching net zero, the only way to halt rising temperatures, is so urgent. “Talk of a ‘net zero recession’ is overblown. Backtracking is confined to fossil fuels and their financiers, while more companies are moving from box-ticking to real emission cuts — a long-overdue reset.” 📄 Access the full Net Zero Stocktake 2025 report here: https://buff.ly/ejYnva9 #NetZeroStocktake #NZT2025 #ClimateGovernance #NetZeroTargets #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateAccountability #RaceToZero #GHGReporting #ClimateData #Sustainability #PolicyTracking

Our partner, Climate Breakthrough, has announced its 2025 Climate Breakthrough Awardees. 👏🌍 Their unique programme supports visionary social change leaders in developing, launching, and scaling their boldest new initiatives to address the climate crisis. Since 2016, Climate Breakthrough awardees have developed initiatives that, collectively, could reduce over 5.3 gigatons of emissions annually by 2030 — a significant global impact. Climate Breakthrough provides the awardees with $4 million, the largest climate award for individuals, in multiyear, flexible, non-directive funding. 🔗 Visit https://lnkd.in/g7RfZrzk to learn more about the 2025 Awardees. #ClimateBreakthroughAward2025 #IKEAfoundation
Today's the day! Meet your 2025 Climate Breakthrough Awardees. Welcome Alessandra Orofino, Gavin McCormick, Liming Qiao, Ramón Mendez Galain, and the team of Giuliana Furci, Merlin Sheldrake, and Toby Kiers. Through the Climate Breakthrough Award program over the next few years, they will develop, launch, and scale their boldest new initiatives for large-scale policy, economic, and social transformation to address the climate crisis. We provide each with $4 million—the largest climate award for individuals—in multiyear, flexible, non-directive funding. Alessandra Orofino (Brazil) wants to develop a communications initiative that aims to scale cultural change and galvanize public commitment across Brazil to protecting the Amazon. This is an ambitious approach to Amazon conservation because, ultimately, fostering deep cultural change can stop deforestation and help enshrine durable policy protections for the Amazon. Gavin McCormick (United States) wants to revolutionize carbon accounting rules for emerging green industries that, without proper oversight, could inadvertently increase pollution by gigatons. If successful, this can ensure that governments and private sector actors make decisions that decrease emissions in reality, not just on paper. Liming Qiao (Singapore) is creating the first coalition targeting grid flexibility and energy storage bottlenecks in the renewable energy transition across the ASEAN region, the world's fourth-largest energy consumer. Ramón Méndez Galain (Uruguay) shaped Uruguay's transformation to 98% renewable electricity. Now he wants to scale that demonstrated approach and partner with countries across the Global South to address systemic barriers that have prevented them from replicating Uruguay's success. Giuliana Furci (Chile), Merlin Sheldrake (United Kingdom), and Toby Kiers (Netherlands) want to establish the legal, regulatory, and scientific groundwork to integrate fungi into global climate agendas and on-the-ground restoration efforts with significant carbon sequestration potential. It’s the start of a movement rooted in collaboration, trust, and local leadership. 🌍 👉 Learn more about how you can join: https://lnkd.in/eA-e46wS #PowerforFood #RegenerativeAgriculture #SNV #IKEAfoundation
🌍 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 Last week, during the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF), partners, governments, enterprises, and others came together to launch 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱, a partnership led by SNV and supported by the IKEA Foundation to strengthen locally-led food and energy systems in Eastern Africa. The energy in the room was inspiring: from discussions to partners sharing their vision on the commitment wall, symbolising a shared dedication to renewable, regenerative, and resilient systems. Annemieke Beekmans, Director of Technical Expertise, SNV, said: “This partnership is an opportunity to think differently about how systems can work together, and who gets to shape them. Beyond a technical overlap, the focus on nexus points between regenerative agriculture and productive use of renewable energy, through better coordination, smarter, more inclusive investment and the primacy of stronger local leadership are vital to scaling outcomes. In a time of increasing fragmentation, values-driven partnerships like this are a way to build the kind of enabling environment that long-term, inclusive and sustainable development actually requires.” Marilia Bezerra, Chief Programme Officer of IKEA Foundation, added: “This partnership is rooted in trust and shared purpose. It’s about standing alongside communities who are leading change from within. By connecting regenerative agriculture and renewable energy, we’re supporting locally driven innovations that respond to real needs and lived experiences. We’re proud to partner with SNV and local leaders in building systems that are resilient, inclusive, and shaped by those most affected.” The 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 Partnership is about more than a programme. It is the beginning of a movement. By working together across systems, we can accelerate change that strengthens livelihoods, improves ecosystems, and creates sustainable futures. 🔗 Interested in learning more or joining the partnership? https://lnkd.in/eA-e46wS #PowerForFood #ResilientFoodSystems #RenewableEnergy #RegenerativeAgriculture #AFSF2025
