Security can’t live in silos. With Microsoft Sentinel, we’re connecting the dots—using graph-based models and AI to transform how defenders protect and respond.     This is just the beginning, and I’m proud of the work our team is doing to help every organization stay secure in a rapidly changing world.

My esteemed colleague John Lambert often says 'attackers think in graphs, defenders think in lists.' Today Microsoft is launching the Microsoft Sentinel Graph to change the paradigm and improve the footing of cybersecurity defenders. This detailed post from John explains the Microsoft Sentinel Graph approach, philosophy, and - of course - includes a bit of architecture. If you know John, you're probably surprised there isn't also an algebra lesson. Congrats to Shawn Bice and the entire Microsoft Sentinel Graph team on bringing this game changing solution to market!

🔗 Why the Graph is Transforming Security—And Why It Matters Now   Today Microsoft is unveiling Microsoft Sentinel Graph (https://lnkd.in/gFMU5iGc), a security platform that redefines how defenders see and respond to threats. Attackers already think in graphs, finding footholds, pivoting within infrastructure, and abusing entitlements and secrets to expand further. Technology must enable defenders to see the graph and break critical attack paths.   Reflecting on my journey at Microsoft, I can’t help but think about the big shifts and transformations I talked about in my earlier LinkedIn post on Microsoft’s 50th Anniversary(https://lnkd.in/gFqjuksr). Today, as threats grow more complex and sophisticated with the pace of change accelerating, one thing is clear: defenders must evolve just as quickly. The way we see our data shapes the way we defend our organizations.   For years, defenders relied on traditional logs—asking questions like “Where did X happen?” But today’s threats demand a new approach. Attackers don’t move in straight lines; they pivot, connect, and exploit relationships. The exhaust from technology usage is siloed logs, and a graph brings crucial context together. To truly understand risk, we need to think in graphs.   That’s why this moment matters. Sentinel Graph gives security teams the power to see environments the way attackers do. Revealing patterns and insights hidden in plain sight.    🌐The Future: Graph-Native Security   Many organizations have wanted to see their infrastructure through a graph lens, but it was just too hard. Deciding how to model entities, snapshotting data, and a cumbersome ETL process are all challenges they have to overcome.   We are moving to a world where IT infrastructure is modeled as a graph by default. When organizations stop bolting on graph views after the fact, and instead, design graph-first systems, security becomes more intuitive, more connected, and ultimately more resilient. That’s the future I see, and it’s already beginning to take shape.  But it’s not “Graph OR Log”— it’s “Graph AND Log.” Both have their place. The future is interoperability: Defenders will pivot seamlessly between relational queries, graph analytics, and anomaly detection, all in one unified experience. Imagine starting with an anomalous sign-in, tracing its blast radius, and drilling into the details—all with a single query language.   💡Bottom Line: Security That Sees the Whole Picture   Attackers think in graphs. Defenders must, too. By embracing graph-based security, we move from reacting to isolated alerts to understanding the full context—making smarter decisions, faster.   Let’s build security that’s as connected as the threats we face. The journey is just beginning—and the possibilities are limitless.   #GraphSecurity #CyberDefense #MicrosoftSecurity #AIReady #SecurityInnovation

Microsoft is transforming its Sentinel platform to become a centerpiece of the tech giant’s cybersecurity strategy for the AI and agentic era, Vasu Jakkal, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for security, compliance, identity, management and privacy, told Kyle Alspach. Read Kyle’s interview with Jakkal, who says the introduction of Sentinel data lake and other new capabilities aims to make the platform much more than a security information and event management (SIEM) offering ↓
