Governments often face more constraints in meeting their objectives than most private-sector companies do—but new McKinsey research shows that adopting practices that enhance organizational health can help. Our recent study across 42 countries found that if public services could reach the productivity levels of the leading performers in their peer groups, the improvement would be worth an estimated $3.5 trillion per year. In this recent article, we offer a systematic approach to improving productivity by using three strategies that have been effective in both public and private sector organizations: https://mck.co/3IZ6jDe #government #publicsector #productivity

Talking to CEOs and policy makers around the U.S.—on both sides of the aisle—I hear a real energy to build. Energy generation. Broadband. Transmission lines. Rail. But while the desire is there, permitting remains a long and expensive process… costing the country up to $2.4 trillion in unrealized GDP. As our new report makes clear, thorough permitting is necessary for ensuring social and environmental safeguards. But few would argue it’s a perfectly efficient process, and we find several opportunities for accelerating timelines that could maintain those protections while helping better meet critical infrastructure needs and fuel future growth. A few that stood out to me: -Smarter deadlines: Standardizing, incentivizing, and enforcing timelines for environmental reviews and other processes can reduce time to build while preserving safeguards -Judicial updates: Litigation often delays projects four-plus years—a new technical court specifically for permitting reviews and other policy remedies could help -Optimizing processes: Administrative bottlenecks, outdated procedures, and lack of staffing are common drivers of delay—smart streamlining in Pennsylvania eliminated nearly three quarters of backlog This is just my birds-eye view. To dive deeper into the methodology, findings, and other recommendations for action, read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gn7FqCzW Thanks to my co-authors Aditya Kumar, Brodie Boland, Bozhidar Stankovikj, and Tim Carter for their work on this… looking forward to more building to come.

The United States is looking to level up its infrastructure— from additional energy generation capacity to transmission lines, broadband, rail lines, and more—but the permitting process is often costly and time consuming. More than 650 large infrastructure projects are awaiting US federal approval to begin construction, with each dollar of investment taking an average of four to five years to clear. In this new article, we explore reforms that could help empower the US federal government to streamline permit reviews and unlock necessary infrastructure, without sacrificing critical social and environmental safeguards.
