80-years after its founding, Secretary-General António Guterres has stressed that the United Nations is needed more than ever. “The world needs our unique legitimacy. Our convening power. Our vision to unite nations, bridge divides, and confront the challenges before us.” Reflecting on the turmoil and multitude of challenges facing people around the world today, the Secretary-General stressed: “In this moment of crisis, the United Nations has never been more essential.”

For the first time ever, renewable energy has generated more power than coal worldwide. “The clean energy future is no longer a distant promise – it’s here,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, urging the world to seize this historic opportunity and accelerate the shift towards a better, more sustainable future for all.

Tobacco use continues to decline globally. The number of people using tobacco has dropped from 1.38 billion in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024 – demonstrating that tobacco control is working and saving lives. Too often, having a job does not ensure a life of dignity. Decent work is a fundamental human right that includes dignity, equality, fair income & safe working conditions – it should be a reality for everyone. Workplaces must prioritize workers' rights, provide equal opportunities, and promote inclusive growth. Tuesday is World Day for Decent Work.

“Two years ago today, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched an abhorrent large-scale terror attack on Israel.” – António Guterres reflects on the 7 October attacks that claimed the lives of more than 1,250 Israelis and foreign nationals, and resulted in more than 250 people being taken hostage. From satellites enabling climate monitoring to navigation systems guiding humanitarian aid, our world depends on outer space. But increased access and activity are putting its safety and sustainability at risk. We must act now to secure our cosmic future. To that end, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future in 2024, committing to safe, sustainable exploration — a promise that must now be realized.
