About us

Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. The Charter of the United Nations is available in full at: http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/

  • From minerals to rivers and mountains, geodiversity is the foundation of all biodiversity. It supports the development and survival of life, and sustains every ecosystem on the planet. Geological diversity can teach us valuable lessons about the impacts of the climate crisis throughout different periods of Earth’s history. By understanding these insights, we can take targeted climate action to adapt more effectively to future risks. On Monday’s Geodiversity Day & every day, join UNESCO in protecting the diversity of our geological heritage.

  • Peace starts in our communities and classrooms. Young people are central to building it — and to creating a world of dignity, justice and opportunity for all. By bringing together all generations to share experiences, listen and collaborate, we can nurture inclusive communities and the next generation of peacebuilders. From grassroots action to global impact, a new UN initiative seeks to include, invest in and partner with young people everywhere to build lasting peace amid today’s escalating challenges. https://lnkd.in/e4eRwfsD

  • For more than 65 years, Jane Goodall dedicated her life to safeguarding nature and its inhabitants. In 2002, the scientist and conservationist was appointed United Nations Messenger of Peace. She worked alongside us and helped inspire our collective efforts for peace, sustainability and harmony with nature. “I’m grateful for her lifelong environmental protection efforts and her strong support for the UN,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres following Dr. Goodall’s passing earlier this week. Scroll through to learn more about Dr. Goodall’s extraordinary life and legacy.

  • “When UN staff and facilities are attacked —violating legal obligations— so, too, is the core of our ability to serve and deliver.” At last week’s United Nations General Assembly, António Guterres urged world leaders to uphold accountability and choose peace rooted in international law. “When accountability shrinks, graveyards grow,” warned the Secretary-General.
