A whirlwind 36 hours in Chicago last week for #BisnowDICE Midwest — I landed just in time to tour a couple of datacenters and get to Wrigley Field to see the Mets get destroyed by the Cubs, but what an awesome ballpark on a beautiful evening! The conference kicked off on Thursday morning with the State of the Midwest Market panel moderated by Shawn K. Ronda, where I was joined by Nelson Abramson, Daniel English and the one-and-only Bill Kleyman 🇺🇦. My main takeaways were that there’s little doubt that we will see a resurgence of edge datacenters for inferencing workloads on the back of the explosive growth in AI, and that Chicago is uniquely situated to be able to benefit from Enterprise, Retail, Hyperscale, AI and Edge Datacenters due to the power and connectivity infrastructure available, along with attractive state and local incentives to drive growth. Throughout the event, I was struck by the unique ways in which people and companies were focused on practical problem solving not just for the obvious issues like power and cooling, but also for the less talked about issues — from staging equipment for developments, to low voltage cabling and perimeter security solutions. Real world solutions to problems that traditionally contribute to cost overruns and disruptive delays. Managed to be able to squeeze in an incredible lunch in the historic Willis Tower at Chef Jonathon Sawyer’s spectacular Kindling restaurant . One of the best and most productive trips to Chicago I can recall. I joke around that our industry is “having a moment.” But it’s so much more than that. This isn’t just another tech cycle—this is an infrastructure renaissance. AI isn’t incremental; it’s exponential. Unlike the cloud era, which optimized for scale and flexibility, AI demands performance at every layer—from silicon to cooling. Generative AI models like DeepSeek and Gemini are driving workloads that are 10x or even 100x more compute-hungry. Goldman Sachs is forecasting a 165% increase in data center power demand by 2030—and they’re probably being conservative. What’s happening now is the redefinition of the data center: from a utility in the IT stack to the foundation of national competitiveness.
