Introducing “Ruby Penny,” our upcycled creation for the Design with Purpose Humble Design competition, crafted in collaboration with NBS Commercial Interiors and Steelcase.
This chair’s journey began in a Humble warehouse, where Caden Musa (H+B), Annette Popiel-Hammerle (NBS), and Tracey Gancasz (Steelcase) crawled through a pile of old, forgotten furniture to find her. As the team began deconstructing the chair, they uncovered a tiny red doll shoe and a rusty wheat penny, a small but powerful reminder of the life it once lived. These treasures inspired the name Ruby Penny, which we affectionately nicknamed The Mullet Chair — a name that will make perfect sense once you see the final reveal.
The transformation was anything but simple. With only Caden able to sew, every stitch was a challenge to overcome. The team worked closely with partners at Steelcase and NBS through renovation sessions to improve comfort and reinforce structural stability. The wood was carefully refinished, and fabric provided by Designtex helped bring the vision to life. We chose a calming blue-teal tone for the body, while ruby accents were woven into the pillow and back fabric, a nod to the treasures that started it all.
All of this came together in just two weeks. Now, Ruby Penny is ready to bring joy and comfort to a future Humble Home, a family in need that will give her a new chapter.
Voting closes September 29th, and the winner will be announced September 30th!
