Southern Africa experienced notable volatility in staple food markets in August. Malawi and Mozambique saw sharp month-on-month maize price increases of 11% and 16%, respectively, while Zambia’s 6% decline made it the region’s most affordable maize market. However, Malawi’s situation remains alarming: maize prices are up 58% year-on-year, straining household budgets amid election-related fiscal pressures. In response, ADMARC has announced imports of 200,000 metric tons of maize to reinforce national reserves and stabilize prices. Rice markets showed mixed patterns - Zambia recorded the region’s highest prices at USD 2,757/MT, followed by Malawi at USD 2,276/MT, while Mozambique maintained stability at USD 923/MT. These dynamics underscore the need for targeted interventions to address supply gaps and protect vulnerable populations across Southern Africa. Olusola Adeyemo (PRINCE2), Lead, Sustainable Farming, Distribution and Extension at AGRA delivered a powerful keynote on the second day of the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) Congress in Kigali. The address, speaking to “The Role of Youth in the Future of Agriculture,” spotlighted Africa’s youth dividend and their readiness to take up space in the agricultural ecosystem. Some of the key highlights were: ✔️400M+ potential workforce ✔️Digital fluency amongst the youth in Africa ✔️Strength & innovative mindset ✔️Entrepreneurial drive Beyond farming, he emphasized opportunities across the value chain, from inputs & services to aggregation, logistics, markets, and retail. He also highlighted AGRA’s YEFFA program, that is targetting to reach well over a million youth across the continent, with dignified jobs by 2028. Besides the keynote speech, Olusola also moderated two dynamic panels on youth & women inclusion, featuring leaders from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH , RUFORUM, African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS), RYAFRwanda, South Sudan Agricultural Producer Union (SSAPU), Women Farmers Association of Kenya (WoFaAK), and National Cooperative Confederation of Rwanda( (NCCR). Day 1 of the Eastern Africa Farmers’ Congress in Kigali was a success! AGRA was well represented, with Boaz Blackie Keizire, Director of Policy and State Capability.
