Official Service Manual and Tools

Rivian offers their official service manual and tools to 3rd party shops for a standard shop fee.

Unfortunately Rivian does NOT offer DIY / consumer-focused Service Manuals or Diagnostic tooling (which even GM provides) which may violate several US states "Right to Repair" laws.

Using Texas as an example, HB 2963 requires:

"manufacturers provide spare parts, manuals, and required tools for products sold or used in Texas", effective Sept, 1, 2026

ODB2 Port

The ODB2 port on the Rivian R1T seems to not offer standard CAN communications (as CAN is no longer required for electric vehicles).

The Rivian ODB2 port does however offer a standard DoIP interface (used by the likes of BMW, etc)

You can attach to this DoIP interfance, and get an ethernet link. Sniffing activity with Wireshark (which should be DoIP aware) shows no activity or communication.

Thoughts:

  • The standard 510 Ohm resistor in the BMW adapters isn't the correct value to give access to DoIP.
  • You have to provide a certificate to some silent network endpoint to authenticate for access.

Diagnostic Software (Full Service Center RiDE)

Rivian runs a proprietary diagnostic server to service vehicle systems. (RiDE)

  • Rivian technicians leverage Windows-based laptops
  • Rivian technicians connect to their service vehicle's or service center's wifi network
  • Rivian technicians connect to a corporate Rivian Palo Alto VPN
  • Techs access a web-based diagnostic software system on an internal goriv.co domain
  • The web-based diagnostic software communicates to the vehicle over their ODB2 service adapter

Rivian has extremely detailed historical logs / graphs about the state of every subsystem in your vehicle down to control pins being high or low.
