Originally used to discuss ideas and culture of the Lisp language family, this is a broad principle regarding software development for profit.

It holds that the greatest thing capitalists want from their programmers is not productivity -- a belief supported by the rhetoric frequently used in the industry. Rather, the totality of incentives manifests in much subtler ways, and productivity takes a back seat to fungibility and control.

This principle highlights the problem space that is being ignored in engineering process, team management, deployment strategy, collaboration workflows/"silos", hardware procurement, defect prioritization, and (as originally claimed) even programming language choices.

For example, one might ask why [many companies treat Agile Development as a technique to manage waterfall](https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/i-will-fucking-haymaker-you-if-you-mention-agile-again/), rather than embracing its concepts to achieve the productivity it promises. This principle would argue it's because teams would become too unique as a cohesive unit, requiring a "reset" in productivity lost whenever one of their members is replaced.
