IUMI Secretary General Lars Lange today concludes his chairmanship of the International Quality Assessment Review Body (IQARB). IQARB is an advisory body that has been established to review the certification process of the quality management systems of members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Marine insurers rely on classification societies’ expertise and judgement, therefore Lars' central involvement in the establishment of IQARB since its inception in 2019 has been important for IUMI and the wider maritime industry. We wish incoming IQARB Chair Thomas Klenum every success and look forward to staying engaged as an ordinary member! For more information about IQARB visit: https://iqarb.org/
After six years at the helm, today is my last day as Chair of the International Quality Assessment Review Body IQARB. Per 01st October, I’ll hand over to Thomas Klenum from the LISCR | The Liberian Registry. Thomas is a long-standing member of the IQARB and the perfect fit for the next steps to be taken by IQARB. He’ll be a great Chair and I wish Thomas all the best in further developing IQARB, together with the marvellous group of IQARB members and the excellent team at the IQARB Secretariat, particularly Łukasz Korzeniewicz, Karl Lumbers and Anantha Padmanabhan. I look back on six busy years (somebody said in the beginning: “Lars, you won't do much more than preparing and chairing the meetings” 😊) in which we turned IQARB from an idea into a well-working entity, helping to harmonize the oversight and auditing of classification societies and recognized organizations. A rich membership of Flag States, industry associations and other interested parties pulls the same string for mutual benefit. Our most recent achievement of merging IQARB with the European entity for EU RO oversight, QACE, shows that we’re on the right track. And the newly established IQARB office in London helped to professionalize proceedings and to increase the speed of development. IQARB is a great example for collaboration between maritime industry and flag States, together with the International Maritime Organization, for mutual benefit. Together, we achieve more. Many thanks to all who supported our journey in the last six years "not too slow and not too fast", particularly to Karl Lumbers, to Robert Ashdown from IACS, to Dr. Heike Deggim and Tatjana Krilic from the IMO, to Karl Seghers from the European Commission, to John Hannon from the US Coast Guard and to Lukasz Korzeniewicz, our new IQARB Secretary. I learned a lot and I had great companionship. For more information about IQARB visit: https://iqarb.org/ International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI)

On Tuesday, IUMI’s Secretary General Lars Lange and Chief Analyst Veith Huesmann had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG), South Africa, to the IUMI head office. Veith and Lars provided an overview of IUMI as an organization and shared insights to the current drivers of the marine insurance industry. The 16 visitors engaged in a lively discussion about the African insurance market and how IIG is strengthening its global connections. Many thanks to Wilmine Prinsloo and Monique Kleinschmidt for facilitating this event. With increasing complexities in maritime trade, marine insurers must navigate a wide landscape of claims related to cargo, hull, pollution, personal injury, war, international regulations and contractual liabilities. Charterers are at the centre of the shipping operation and face significant exposure from multiple directions. Therefore, loss prevention in charterers’ liability is not only about minimizing claims – it is about understanding where risks originate from and taking proactive steps to mitigate them. In our next webinar, Danielle Hofmans, Manager Claims at Charterama b.v. will discuss key risk factors in charterers’ liability, highlighting the common pitfalls in charterparties, the risks associated with different cargo types, the impact of poor vessel vetting and the evolving challenges of sanctions compliance and environmental regulations. The discussion with our participants will be hosted by Lucien Lesuis, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Charterama. Join us on September 24 and sign up here: https://lnkd.in/dQdGwQjs

So, this was #IUMI2025! Five days packed with discussions in our Technical Committees; workshops shedding light on key issues, trends and developments; and of course the presentation of the global marine insurance report. On top, our members, IPPs, affiliates and expert speakers made the most of the networking and mingling opportunities in the vibrant city of Singapore. Heartfelt thanks to our wonderful hosts from the GIA Singapore who turned this conference in memorable event! Thank you also to all our Committee Chairs and members who put on such an outstanding conference programme. We would further like to sincerely thank our sponsors from 38 companies and organisations. Without your support, #IUMI2025 would not have been possible. And of course a big thank you to our delegates from around the world who travelled to Singapore from near and far to make this an extra-special IUMI conference! The baton has now been passed on to our hosts of #IUMI2026. Looking forward to reconnecting in Rotterdam next September: https://iumi2026.com/
