Better data and technology are essential. That was the pulse at #GPDRR2025 in Geneva. The GEO community showed how Earth intelligence moves from insight to impact: early warnings, ecosystem risk, finance and youth-led innovation. I was grateful for the opportunity to present on land degradation assessment and planning in the UNSDGs to the 18th meeting of the #CEOS Virtual Constellation on Land Surface Imaging (LSIVC) in Ispra, Italy last week. CEOS has been a great ally to the GEO LDN and UNCCD for many years. I presented a few of the data and analytics priorities from my perspective (and very boldly, without endorsement or cross checking from anyone). My recommendations included: ▪Data harmonisation - to improve the consistency and co-interpretation of land degradation assessments between spatial scales, and over time as new data streams emerge ▪Methods for assessing degradation in areas of low vegetation cover - how do we measure changes in soil C and vegetation cover in deserts? And how do we set a neutrality baseline if your entire landscape is sand? ,and ▪Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for LDN - how can seeing through clouds improve land degradation assessments in the Pacific Islands? Can the different wavelengths provided by new SAR missions be integrated into a dynamic vegetation vertical profile product? And how do we even interpret land degradation from SAR data? What's your thoughts?

🗾 Today is Disaster Prevention Day in Japan — a fitting day to share my second #GPDRR 2025 blog. ✍️ I co-wrote this piece with Andiswa Mlisa at Pacific Community-SPC, reflecting on her exchange with the President of Palau. It was a powerful reminder of why we must continue to strengthen #DigitalEarthPacific for the Pacific Islands 🏝️. 🙏A heartfelt thank you to Jenty Kirsch-Wood and Iria Touzon Calle Calle for having me on the Organizing Team of the session they led, where the President of Palau gave a keynote that left us all inspired. 🛰️ Read the blog here: https://lnkd.in/ebumBRuR
