It's one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, and you've probably never heard of it. It's called Synthetic Identity Fraud and here at the U.S. Secret Service - Washington Field Office we want to give you tools so you can avoid becoming a victim.
👉 Fraudsters who commit synthetic identity fraud steal information from unsuspecting individuals to create a synthetic identity. They often start with stolen personal data such as Social Security Numbers (SSNs), which are frequently bought and sold on the dark web.
👉 Children’s SSNs are particularly attractive targets because they usually go unused for years, making them less likely to raise red flags.
👉 Once the criminals have real data like an SSN, they combine it with fabricated personally identifiable information (PII), such as fake names, addresses, and phone numbers, to build a synthetic identity. This hybrid of real and false data forms a synthetic ID that looks authentic to most systems.
👉 Criminals may initially use the synthetic identity responsibly to build a credit history and score. Once a sufficient credit profile is established, they can exploit it for larger fraudulent activities, such as taking out loans or maxing out credit cards before disappearing. Because there is no clearly identifiable victim in this kind of fraud, it often goes unnoticed.
So how do you protect yourself?🛡️
✅ Regularly check credit reports and bank statements for any unauthorized activity and look for different names being associated with your social security number in your credit file.
✅ Use Strong passwords: Implement strong, unique passwords for online accounts and enable two-factor authentication where possible.
✅ Be Cautious with Personal Data: Limit the sharing of personal information and be wary of unsolicited requests for sensitive data.
✅ Lock your credit reports: Locking your credit file can make it more difficult for fraudsters to open up new credit in your name. When you need to apply for credit, you can temporarily unlock your credit report to complete your application.
