Google and USM partner to offer AI and job skills

Year five of the Global Strike National Security Fellowship recently wrapped up with 15 students from Louisiana Tech University, Grambling State University, and LSU Shreveport. They have helped shape the future of national defense via data analytics, decision tools, advanced learning technologies, human factors, and advanced manufacturing technology.

In Calgary, a different kind of classroom is taking shape. Instead of flipping through textbooks, Grade 5 students at Douglasdale School stood at a SMART Board and spoke directly with Canadian naval officers about life at sea. That is the vision behind SMART Technologies: using Canadian made innovation to turn learning into conversation. Under the leadership of CEO Nicholas Svensson, the company has spent nearly four decades helping students and teachers connect, adapt, and make education more inclusive. The demand for information security professionals far exceeds the supply of qualified workers, but Penn State Great Valley‘s master’s degree in information science is working to meet that need. 💻Jeffrey Lipson, an alumnus of that program who went on to found the cybersecurity firm Layer 8 Security, worked with his company five years ago to establish a scholarship for information science students. This year, he endowed the Jeffrey P. Lipson Master of Science Scholarship in Information Science. Both scholarships offer students in the master’s program $2,500 each year, with a preference for active military service members and veterans, in a nod to Lipson’s experience as a retired Marine colonel. https://ow.ly/l5gA50Wyz7H

More than 30 industry partners joined Naval Postgraduate School students, faculty, and DOD professionals at the July Emerging Tech Showcase & Student Thesis Fair to explore new technologies, address operational challenges, and identify opportunities for research collaboration. Fall semester programming for the military-affiliated community at MIT has officially kicked off. In collaboration with the MIT Career Advising and Professional Development office, we have introduced the first workshop of a series scheduled for this academic year. These workshops aim to empower our students with crucial knowledge and assistance as they look to advance their careers or find their first. We were joined by four outstanding panelists who generously shared their expertise and offered advice on enhancing the skill of storytelling for our military-affiliated students. It was a pleasure to share our study at the 31st Americas Conference on Information Systems (#AMCIS2025), Montreal, Canada, this week, organized by the Association for Information Systems. Our study examines the role of visual narrative elements (specifically symbols) in an information campaign's engagement, influence, and trust by tapping into recent advances in AI to process multimedia data from YouTube. We are grateful to the US Department of Defense, National Science Foundation (NSF), Arkansas Research Alliance and Maulden-Entergy Endowment, and the Donaghey Foundation at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for making the research possible.

Launched in 2022, the online MSCS program has witnessed exponential growth. The MSCS is the largest online master’s program in the Tickle College of Engineering, with 187 students, and is ranked fifth overall at the university. The MSCS program helps fulfill UT’s land-grant mission of increasing access to the state’s flagship land-grant and research university. Before you make a decision to go to college and spend money there, take an aptitude battery test to find out where your gifts and talents would best be put to use. If trade school looks like a good fit for what you like, go there. If the aptitude battery test shows you should look at college for future education, go look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics for projected jobs for the next 10 years. Look at the career fields people with what you are thinking of majoring get into and talk with some of those people. Find out what actions it took for them to get to where they are. Several years ago, I had a young woman who majored in IT Engineering. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the career field was overmanned by 25%. I told her to get her Microsoft and Cisco certificates to make herself marketable. At that time, those were in high demand. For me personally, I wanted to fly airplanes in the USAF. The best avenue to get to that end as a pilot was the USAF Academy. I was fortunate enough to get an appointment, graduate, and become a pilot. The USAF Academy is not for everybody. It was right for me. I am very thankful for the education an opportunities offered and taken.
