Most burnout isn’t caused by doing too much. It’s caused by how work is designed. In this session from Distributed Workplace Unboxed, Allison Gabriel, Ph.D. challenges a common assumption: that recovery is something employees should fix after work. Instead, she asks a better question: how do we design work so there’s less to recover from in the first place? Proud to support Running Remote as they bring evidence-based thinking to leaders building remote and distributed teams.

Most people aren’t exhausted because they’re doing too much. They’re exhausted because they’re spending their energy on the wrong things. In her session at Distributed Workplace Unboxed vol. 3, Allison Gabriel, Ph.D., Professor of Management and Faculty Director at Purdue University, reframed how we think about burnout in remote, distributed, and hybrid work. When work is always accessible, Slack, email, and meetings across time zones, recovery gets squeezed, not strengthened. Instead of asking “How do we recover better after work?”, Allison and her colleague Kate Zipe propose a more powerful question: “How do we design work so there’s less to recover from in the first place?” 🎥 Watch Allison’s full 2-minute bite thanks to our partners at Fellow - AI Meeting Assistant A big thank you to our co-organiser Charter, our moderator Massella Dukuly, and our founding sponsor, Time Doctor, for helping us bring Distributed Workplace Unboxed Vol. 3 to life.

  • Most leaders are held accountable for performance, but don’t have clear, consistent metrics to measure it. This guide breaks down 31 employee performance metrics across five areas: quality, output, efficiency, contribution, and wellbeing. You’ll see what to track, how to use the data, and how to apply it across remote, hybrid, and in-office teams without slipping into micromanagement. If you’re building a more data-informed performance culture, this is a solid blueprint. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/evBP4hi6

  • If your attendance data isn’t accurate, it’s hard to trust staffing, payroll, or performance decisions. This article breaks down how to move from manual timesheets and keycards to modern, digital attendance tracking that actually works for remote and hybrid teams, and shows how workforce analytics turn “who showed up” into real insight on presence, overtime, and workload. • Most operations teams are drowning in complexity but starving for visibility. AI is changing that. Instead of just reporting what happened last month, it can help you: ✅ See workflow bottlenecks in real time ✅ Balance team capacity before burnout hits ✅ Automate repetitive tasks that slow everyone down ✅ Predict future demand with data, not guesses ✅ Optimize resource usage and reduce hidden waste In our article, we break down these use cases in detail and show how AI, paired with workforce analytics, helps leaders move from firefighting to proactive decision-making. “Time Doctor uncovered that 70% of licenses were unused, saving our company six figures.” For this customer's digital services team, design licenses were a quiet cost leak. Seats kept getting added, but there wasn’t clear visibility into who was actually using the tools day to day. With Time Doctor’s Web & App Usage reports, they were able to: ∙ See exactly which teams and roles were using the graphic design app ∙ Cut unused licenses by 70% ∙ Save six figures annually and protect profitability This is the kind of ROI that comes from treating workforce analytics as a finance and ops lever, not just a productivity dashboard.

  • Busy executives do not just need help. They need proof that help is working. “As soon as we started using Time Doctor, we saw a positive ROI in our first month. Utilization of reports has resulted in substantial growth.” – Eric Taussig, Prialto By tracking how virtual assistants actually spend their time, Prialto was able to: ∙ Coach more effectively and streamline workflows ∙ Share transparent productivity reports with clients ∙ Protect accounts and grow recurring revenue If you are scaling remote or managed services teams, this is a great example of how visibility and reporting turn into real ROI, not just more data.

  • Most teams still measure “productivity” with hours worked, green status lights, and meeting counts. That tells you who looks busy, not who’s moving the business forward. High-performing teams measure instead: ✅ Productive vs. unproductive time ✅ Protected focus time for deep work ✅ Tool usage patterns (which apps help vs. waste time) ✅ Unusual activity signals that flag burnout or bottlenecks early In our guide, we break down how AI productivity metrics make these signals visible without micromanaging, and how role-based benchmarking shows what “good” really looks like across roles and industries.
