Special Report: It’s been half a decade of upheaval at the 100 biggest fundraising groups. What do their changing tactics tell us about the state of raising money today? Much of the nonprofit world is headed into the second half of the decade rattled by the shock waves of the first half: the pandemic, a volatile economy, steep declines in everyday giving, and most recently, steep cuts in government funding. In response, organizations are tweaking or even tearing up their fundraising playbooks, trying out new tactics and strategies. Today the Chronicle of Philanthropy releases America's Favorite Charities 2025, our special report identifying the 100 nonprofits that earn the most support from individual Americans, private foundations, and corporate philanthropies. These organizations each raise hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, in gifts of cash and stock — more than $38 billion collectively in 2023, or roughly one out of every $15 donated to charity that year. This list includes century-old titans such as the United Way and the American Red Cross as well as the 11-year-old Obama Foundation. Organizations are ranked based on the average amount they raised annually from 2021 through 2023, the latest year data are available for all groups. We also examined their annual giving from 2018 through 2020 as a baseline to see who’s growing (and how quickly) and who’s not. Our full coverage includes analysis of the donation trends, fundraising strategies, and macro forces — political, economic, and cultural — that are influencing giving. Also, see our methodology for the report and read about our partnership with Cause IQ, which provided much of the data for the report.
