City of Austin and the Toole Design team gettin' it done 🤝👷
Very exciting to see the City of Austin trialing a quick roll out of bike lane separators using a slipform extruded curb that's "keyed" into the asphalt to keep it in place. All about being quick and replacing flex posts and paint buffers to give an extra boost to cycling comfort 💚 We've been working hard at Toole Design Group (Ryan, Mara & Alonso!) to help work through the options and get staff the standard details needed to support this effort. As usual in Austin, the ink is barely dry and they're already sending us photos and videos of it being built - Austin staff move impressively fast! Austin's video here: https://lnkd.in/grYbatS7

Say hello to Toole Design staff at the American Society of Landscape Architects 2025 Conference, taking place next week in New Orleans! Here's where we'll be and what we'll be talking about: 🌿 On Sunday, Cindy Zerger, PLA, ASLA and Ian Lockwood, PE join Sara Zewde of Studio Zewde to explore the role landscape architects play in redesigning highway corridors. Through case studies, they’ll show how these projects can shape more equitable, connected, and resilient communities. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eD37P8V9 🚴 On Monday morning, Sarah J. and Susannah Barton will lead an e-bike tour of New Orleans' bike infrastructure. Joined by Jennifer Ruley of the City of New Orleans and Allene La Spina of Bike Easy, they'll guide participants on a 7-mile ride along buffered bike lanes and greenways. We’re proud to support the development of the Bring Back 6th report in collaboration with Our Streets and many partners. This new report aims to build a shared understanding of the corridor’s history and explores highway alternatives in tandem with MnDOT’s Highway 55/Olson Memorial Highway Study. Earlier this year, local and state partners came together for a multi-day design charrette, working side-by-side in a collaborative, solution-oriented process. The resulting design options reimagine the 12 acres of land as a linear park, mixed-use neighborhood blocks, or a tree-lined transitway. Take a closer look at the three design concepts, as well as the report's key findings here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmQCwWj3

Shout-out to HBCU alums Cipriana Patterson, Ayende Thomas, and Cierra Belton for sharing their expertise and career journeys with future engineers at Howard University this week! In Cipriana's words, "In a world where people that look like me have to constantly prove themselves and fight for freedoms that should be free, HBCUs can be a safe haven, a protected place, where we can grow, learn, and just be." ✨ #HBCUWeek

The future of transportation looks bright! Yesterday, I, along with our Howard alum Ayende Thomas, P.E. and Cierra Belton, spent time with Howard University 's senior engineering design class, discussing active transportation, multimodal design and our career journeys. Inspired by their curiosity, thoughtfulness, and purpose, I'm excited to see this next generation of engineers push us toward a smarter, fairer, and more inclusive transportation system!

Happy #HBCUWeek! We're proud to celebrate our staff who are alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. For Project Planner Jalen M., attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University meant learning alongside peers and finding a true sense of belonging: “Throughout my journey, I was fortunate to have mentors and a strong network at my HBCU who significantly influenced my growth. As former student president of SASLA, I recognize the importance of giving back through studio critiques or helping students find internships. It is crucial to never forget where you come from and to support those who follow in your footsteps.” We’re grateful to Jalen and all our HBCU alumni for bringing their skills, values, and leadership to Toole Design.

New resource alert! 🔔 Vehicle safety often gets overlooked in local safety and #VisionZero plans, but it plays a critical role in protecting people on our streets. Together with the Vision Zero Network, our Safety Practice Lead Angie B Byrne, MPH, MCHES, CPH shares how communities can promote safer vehicles, backed by real-world examples. Here are 5 key strategies to get started: 1️⃣ Assess your municipal fleet 2️⃣ Establish safety goals and update related policies and plans 3️⃣ Change, retrofit, or right-size municipal fleets 4️⃣ Engage partners and gain buy-in 5️⃣ Continuously refine and improve vehicle safety decisions To see how communities are putting this into action, read the full resource: https://lnkd.in/gBuWQUqv

The first of three Transportation Demand Management (TDM) pilots with the Atlanta Regional Commission is officially underway! Alongside our partners at Blue Cypress Consulting, LLC, our project team trained a new cohort of local transportation ambassadors from Atlanta's West End. During the three-day training, they: 🚲 Led an educational bike ride to experience the streets firsthand 📍 Practiced planning and leading bike and transit routes, such as getting to the airport 📚 Discussed everyday travel challenges, like weather, carrying cargo, traveling with kids, and safety 🚉 Met with MARTA, Atlanta DOT, Lime, and Bird staff to learn more about transit and micromobility Now they’re ready to bring their skills back to their community and support new multimodal commuters. Thanks to these ambassadors for leading the way—right on time for #TDMWeek! Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/eeVkTPBy First photo courtesy of Blue Cypress Consulting.
