The teenager, wearing a gold dress and a silver crown, entered her birthday party in a small white Bentley. Bubbles flew into the clear sky as 50 Cent’s “In da Club” played on a large speaker and dozens of guests cheered. Thus began the extravagant quinceañera for Holly, a 15-year-old cat from Houston. “I wanted to show off my love for her,” Miranda Gonzalez, Holly’s owner, told The Washington Post. Gonzalez’s love for Holly has spread farther than she expected. Videos and photos from the event have received millions of views on TikTok, where Holly’s new fans have enjoyed seeing her treated like a princess. Read the full story: wapo.st/4n1kWF8

In Miami, people don’t “get” in line, they “make” the line. They are not “very” tired, they are “super” tired. They don’t “get out” of their cars, they “get down” from their cars. It’s a form of what experts call Miami English. Read more: wapo.st/46GYhYY

With the WNBA playoffs underway, punctuating one of the most successful seasons in league history, the future of women’s basketball will shine bright with stars, storylines and growth across the board, including higher ratings, merchandise sales and expansion franchise fees. But beneath the surface, tension between the players and team owners threatens to derail that progress. It stems from a seemingly simple yet actually tricky question: How much are WNBA players worth? Players and some economists say it’s straightforward: Players should earn roughly 50 percent of the league’s revenue, just as the athletes in the big four U.S. men’s sports leagues do. https://wapo.st/47FF7nk

“I can’t talk to you,” one WNBA owner told me. “No one should be talking to you.” 👀 🥊The WNBA’s labor fight is one of the biggest #sportsbiz stories of the year. 💰Players say they deserve 50% of league revenue — the same split the men in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL receive. Owners argue privately that expenses eat up a larger share in a still-growing league. 💰 At stake is a transformational opportunity for women’s basketball. Players are rallying around the demand to “Pay Us What You Owe Us,” and union leaders say they’re ready for drastic action, even a strike in 2026. As one labor lawyer told me, this fight will come down to **solidarity vs. money.** #WNBA #WomensSports #WomenInSports #WBB 🔗 Full story: https://lnkd.in/ekckSN55

Visitors came to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo from near and far Friday morning to see Qing Bao — a big black-and-white ball of fuzzy cuteness — celebrate her fourth birthday. Staff at the zoo presented the giant panda with presents and a cake made of frozen diluted beet, pineapple and apple juices, and adorned with fruits and vegetables. After about 30 minutes of her birthday guests eagerly watching her every move, Qing Bao had partied enough. She climbed a tree and nestled into the fork of its branches and took a nap. https://wapo.st/41SWxJx

My first ever piece in The Washington Post - on a topic I think is central to American security. As Constitution Day (Sept 17) approaches, the United States should be doing more to protect "e pluribus unum" - not undermine it. Allowing TikTok to continue operating under Chinese ownership and keeping America safe, strong, and prosperous are mutually exclusive. Comments welcome! "Building up our capability is central to American security, but so too, is building up our will. That takes small steps, every day, by all of us. But the first small step is in the hands of the president this Constitution Day. If we truly want to honor the American legacy — to say nothing of our future — we must ensure that TikTok is immediately sold or banned." Many thanks to the editors and my team at The Vandenberg Coalition for their help! https://lnkd.in/eYvrweqA
