NEWS | ROGERS GROUP INC. EARNS ENERGY STAR PLANT CERTIFICATION NASHVILLE, TN – Rogers Group Inc. is proud to announce that its Candora asphalt plant in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Huntsville asphalt plant in Huntsville, Alabama, have earned the ENERGY STAR® Plant Certification—a prestigious recognition of energy efficiency and sustainability in the asphalt industry. Both Candora and Huntsville achieved an impressive Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) score of 88, underscoring Rogers Group’s commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship. This certification, newly introduced in January 2024, positions Rogers Group among the first in the industry to reach this milestone. When asked about how they achieved this certification, both plant managers—Nick Richardson (Huntsville) and Mike Smiddy (Candora)—highlighted the importance of having a great crew. “Training and development of our crews is a constant process that is crucial to the success of an asphalt plant. A maintenance and best practices checklist is much less valuable than an employee who understands why we do the things on the checklist,” says Nick. “Empowering your crews to take ownership of their plant is key. When you can get them to care about the condition of the plant, cleanliness, maintenance, and efficiency become a matter of pride—and the crew that runs Candora are very proud of their plant,” says Mike. In addition to Candora and Huntsville, two more plants have recently earned ENERGY STAR® Plant Certification: the Anderson plant in South Carolina, which earned a score of 83, and the Tanner plant in Alabama, which earned a score of 76. As part of Rogers Group’s broader environmental strategy, all four certified plants implemented a range of operational improvements including enhanced burner tuning, streamlined start-up/shut-down procedures, and routine equipment audits to cut down on unnecessary energy use. These improvements contributed to measurable energy savings and helped achieve the certification standards. At Rogers Group, our sustainability efforts are built on five core pillars: Employees, Customers, Community, Operational Excellence, and Market Growth. We prioritize the safety and development of our employees, actively engage with and support the communities we serve, and continuously strive to exceed customer expectations. Operational excellence drives our commitment to sustainability, as we seek innovative ways to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize resource use across our operations. By integrating sustainability into our business strategy, we not only mitigate risks but also create new opportunities for growth and innovation. At Rogers Group, sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a journey focused on long-term success, adaptability, and environmental responsibility. Meet Noe, Night Shift Leadman. Noe has been with Rogers Group for five years. Before joining the team, he worked for a heavy hauling and rigging company, transporting equipment across the country—a role that kept him on the road. Ready to settle down, he made the switch after hearing great things from former coworkers who had already found their place here. What Noe enjoys most is the variety—no two days are the same, and there’s always something new to learn. Being around heavy machinery every day, he says, “feels like being a little kid again.” Looking back on his experience, Noe shared, “They take care of you as long as you take care of them.”
