The newly released ALICE Report from United Way of North Central New Mexico reveals a sobering reality: thousands of New Mexicans are working hard but still unable to afford basic necessities. These ALICE households — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — earn above the federal poverty level yet face daily financial instability. ICYMI: In northern New Mexico, too many families have felt the devastating impact of substance use disorder (SUD). At Presbyterian Española Hospital, we see every day how hard it can be to find timely, compassionate care close to home. That’s why expanding our addiction medicine clinic matters so much. The expansion, which was funded through a Rural Health Care Delivery Fund grant, adds 11 exam rooms, more providers—including doctors specializing in addiction medicine—extended hours and same-day appointments to support nearly four times as many patients annually. Peer support specialists, who use their own lived experience to help others with SUD navigate their recovery, will continue to be a cornerstone in the clinic—ensuring patients receive the support they need from follow-up appointment coordination to medication access to additional recovery resources.
