Voting is the foundation of American democracy. Every eligible voter should have an accessible, secure, and reliable way to cast their ballot free from interference, judgement, and any barriers keeping them from their civic duty. Mail-in voting, also known as absentee voting, is just that – accessible, secure, and reliable. It has been the go-to method for Washington State voters since the early 2000s. This leadership role will guide our organizing team, build grassroots power, and strengthen civic engagement across the county. As fireworks light up the sky and flags wave proudly, July 4th is often seen as a day of celebration in the United States- a symbol of freedom, independence, and national pride. But for many, especially within BIPOC communities and immigrant populations, the holiday can also bring up feelings of dissonance, grief, and reflection. Today, tomorrow, and every day after that. Black lives matter. Systemic racism can be defined as policies and practices that exist throughout a whole society that leads to a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race. Systemic racism takes many forms, including: 👉 When one group of people and their values, ways of doing things are classified as “normal” and other groups of people are “abnormal”. 👉 The political power to withhold basic rights from people of colour and use the full power of the state to enforce segregation and inequality, in practice. 👉 The social power to deny people of colour full inclusion 👉 The economic power that privileges white people in terms of job placement, advancement, wealth, and property accumulation.
