This transmission line needed pole installs through farmland and marsh—no margin for rutting, runoff, or delays. And a potential flooding event was coming. We laid out a single-lane matting corridor with stabilized pads at each pole base. The mats were connected together and concrete ballast was used as anchors to hold everything in place. The waters eventually came but the damage was minimal, no mats were lost, and work was able to resume quickly. Quick thinking and decades of site access experience made this project successful for our customer. #MatIQ #TransmissionReady #FarmFieldFriendly #UtilityAccess #Flooding

25 miles of energized potential—spanning pier foundations, pole installs, and line pulls across tight ROW and sharp turns. And Sterling had to mat it. This transmission build took on 2 seasons, 2 highways, and a whole lot of water in an arid flood zone. With only one lane to work with, we split the project into 6 segments and mapped out 5 strategic moves. By using TerraLam mats, this saved on truck count for initial delivery as compared to bolted mats or timber mats. During the intermediate moves, TerraLam were also twice as fast to relocate. With TerraLam weighing up to 50% less than a bolted mat but being as strong as a timber mat, this ultimately saved our customer over $5M off their bottom line by reducing the mat count needed and transport and setup time to allow the project to begin sooner. #MatIQ #LineBuildsDoneRight #TransmissionReady

Matting for stadium renovations? Absolutely! Under the grass are miles of expensive plumbing for irrigation, heating, drainage, and more. The right matting can distribute the loads across the ground so heavy equipment doesn't crush what's buried underneath or tear up the turf. When a certain Big 10 university needed stadium upgrades, they chose the TerraLam 508 mat to protect their field. It's the same mat that successfully protected Wrigley Field and Soldier Field just a few years back during their renovations. The 508's 5-layer design combines strength, light weight, and amazing load distribution capabilities to outshine any other mat for this application. To achieve the same level of ground pressure, multiple layers of composite mats would be needed adding substantial cost. And timbers with their 50% smaller footprint just wouldn't work due to higher loads being directed into the ground, not to mention twice the amount of truckloads needed for delivery as well. Thanks to our very own, and super busy of late, Brent Sedlacek for representing us at the Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (SSCA) annual conference last week and to all the people that attended the Value Chain panel! Great conversations to be had with others in the industry about how to best mitigate supply chain risk for each aspect of the future utility projects, from the transformers to the labor to the matting. Looking forward to continuing being part of the conversation and the solution! #SSCA #SustainableSupplyChains #UtilityCompanies #UtilityWork #Sterling
Last week I had the honor of participating on a Value Chain panel at the Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (SSCA) annual conference. Great dialogue between Utility, Operator, Contractor/EPC, and Material Supplier about dependencies within the Electrical Utility industry. To mitigate risk during these dynamic times, simple, yet nuanced, communication is one key to success! Enjoyed representing Sterling Site Access Solutions in the conversation with Vistra Corp., SMUD, Burns & McDonnell. Good chat between Luis Jenkins, CSDP, USMC Ret., Devon C., briana schrum, Chris Peterson #supplychaincrunch

With an average of 5,000 new or upgraded miles of high voltage transmission lines be built each year for the next five years, there will be increased stress on every aspect of the construction supply chain, including access mats and the labor to install them. Our own Director of Sustainability Brent Sedlacek does a deep dive on the potential supply chain crunch in this article on Energy Central. If you are even remotely involved in transmission and distribution, you’ll want to read this article: https://lnkd.in/gPx3MUkX #SupplyChain #TransmissionAndDistribution #SiteAccess #AccessMats #Sterling #ElectricUtility

We’re thrilled to announce that Sterling Solutions has been recognized by Fast Company in its annual Innovation by Design awards. Our Innovation Team developed a new method, dubbed “dipping and doweling” (which is now patent pending) to make our TerraLam® access mats perform better for longer periods of time, meaning fewer mat swaps/replacements that disrupt operations and raise costs. The new enhancement is applied after the production of the TerraLam CLT mats. First, strategically located holes are drilled in the mat, which is then submerged in an environmentally-friendly treatment that absorbs into the wood. Then, hardwood dowels are driven into the holes to seal the treatment in while providing improved stability and endurance of the mat. The dowels offer similar fastening capability as conventional metal fasteners, but eliminate the cost and hassle of removing metal bolts before end-of-life disposal. The mats’ increased resistance to decay enables them to be used in regions where heat and humidity are prevalent, offering customers a new alternative to mats made from plastic or heavy hardwoods. Hat tip to our Innovation Team who worked tirelessly to conceptualize, design, test and validate this new process.
