School District U-46 is grateful to be a part of Northern Illinois University's Licensed Educator Accelerated Pathway (LEAP) program, which expands the teacher workforce by training paraeducators to become licensed special education teachers. U-46 Overview and Information Covering 90 square miles, School District U-46 serves portions of 11 communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. The District is approximately 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, and the majority of our communities are easily accessible from major interstates and commuter rail lines. School District U-46 serves nearly 35,000 students in grades preK-12 The District ranks as the second largest in Illinois with 38 elementary schools, 8 middle schools and 5 high schools. Today, we welcomed thousands of students across U-46 for the first day of school! It’s a day filled with excitement and fresh starts but also reflection. For some of our school buildings, today marks their last first day of school. As we prepare to retire several beloved schools, we honor the generations of students, staff, and families who filled those halls with learning, laughter, and lasting memories. While we look ahead to new, modern spaces designed for 21st-century learning, we also carry forward the stories and spirit of the buildings that shaped our history.
