The US hit a crucial milestone in its EV transition this summer: price parity with gas vehicles. But it likely won't last. According to data InsideEVs got from J.D. Power, the average transaction price for a BEV dipped slightly below the going price for an internal combustion vehicle in July and August. Anybody who's been following new EV prices will know how remarkable that is given the years of hard-to-swallow costs. It didn't occur in spite of all the uncertainty in the EV industry right now—it happened because of it. As Tyson Jominy explains it, manufacturers are offering near-record incentives to sell down their stock of EVs before the tax-credit hammer comes down on September 30. So this summer's pricing was, in all likelihood, more of a blip. But it foreshadows what America's EV market could look like once price parity takes hold more permanently. Mirroring other markets where EVs got cheaper than ICE vehicles, America's EV sales have shot through the roof as costs dropped.
