For too long, local franchises have had to fight the stigma that franchises are “big business,” impacting the way they’re perceived by consumers and treated by lawmakers. That’s why we have decided to make a long-term investment to ensure the public understands what franchises really are: your neighbors, friends, and the small business owners who create local jobs, invest in their communities, and give back to those around them. Through Franchise Means Local, we’re introducing the people and real stories behind the brand names — entrepreneurs like Clement Troutman of Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Tanya M Lee of Woofie's — who embody what it means to be local business owners making a difference. Franchise businesses employ nearly 9 million Americans at more than 831,000 local businesses that generate $870 billion in economic output across 300 industries. More than 80% of franchisees own just one location, with franchising as their pathway to business ownership and financial independence.
