To help enrich and lengthen the special relationship between people and their pets
About us
Work that matters, fueled by passion for pets! At Hill’s we have a purpose. Every day around the world, we transform the lives of millions of pet families through pioneering innovation, science-led nutrition and the best and brightest people. Did you know that the work we do today was originally inspired by Buddy, a guide dog who was suffering from kidney failure in the late 1930s? Dr. Mark Morris Sr. believed the illness was a result of poor nutrition, so he developed a new pet food to help Buddy live a longer, healthier life. That pet food was the forerunner of Hill’s Prescription Diet® k/d® Canine. Dr. Morris was a caring veterinarian, a visionary for clinical nutrition and the founder of Hill’s Pet Nutrition. We are proud to carry on his tradition of caring and his commitment to transforming lives through the highest-quality pet nutrition available. In fact, our mission is “to help enrich and lengthen the special relationships between people and their pets.” Hill's® Science Diet®, Prescription Diet® and Ideal Balance® brand pet foods are sold in more than 86 countries, with total annual sales of more than $2 billion. We share our core values of Caring, Global Teamwork and Continuous Improvement with our parent company, Colgate-Palmolive. Our support to homeless pets and shelters is a living, breathing example of our values, and we are an industry leader in providing pet food to shelter animals around the world. Our Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program has donated more than $300 million worth of food to shelters and has helped more than 12 million pets find their forever home! Have you ever judged a book by its cover? We all want the best for our pets, but how much do our own perceptions of ingredients influence what we think is best? Check out the latest research from the Hill’s Pet Nutrition product development scientists, published in the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴, which takes a fascinating look at how pet owners' perceptions can override their own senses. In a blind study, 99 dog owners were asked to evaluate five different dry dog foods based only on sight and smell. The foods were made with different chicken protein sources, including fresh chicken, dried chicken, and chicken by-product meal. The clear winner for best aroma, appearance, and overall liking was the food made with chicken by-product meal. The twist? When we revealed the ingredients, 𝟴𝟲% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, now choosing the food with fresh, deboned chicken as their favorite. It's a powerful look at how what’s on a label can completely change the perception of quality, sometimes overriding our own senses. This research opens up a bigger conversation about ingredients, sustainability, and the biases brought into pet food decisions. Curious to learn more?
