While the Detroit Lions are on the road, we stayed home and asked some of our team members a few trivia questions to get ready for the game today! 🏈

We recently launched a new virtual nursing program at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital to enhance patient care, support bedside teams and address critical workforce shortages. Eric Wallis, our Senior Vice President & Chief Nurse Executive, spoke with Becker's Healthcare about how the new program has already had an immediate effect following its launch earlier this summer. During the first full month of the program at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, virtual nurses spent more than 600 hours on patient calls, completed nearly 25,000 tasks and interacted with about 1,350 patients. With over 200 beds now wired for the technology, Wallis shared those numbers translated into hundreds of hours of bedside work lifted off floor nurses. “What I’m excited about is that this gives some of our nurses the opportunity to take on a virtual role, to not have to be on their feet for a 12-hour shift,” shared Wallis. “The feedback that we get from our nurses over and over and over again was, this is the best thing that you’ve ever done for us.” Patients and families have been receptive to the pilot as well saying the additional support helps them feel safer and more connected. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital will be the next site to launch later this year, with Henry Ford Wyandotte and West Bloomfield hospitals planned for 2026. Learn more: https://bit.ly/488vRZd

Three of our emergency physicians at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital - Dr. Alan Janssen, Dr. Chris Ash and Dr. Sanford Ross - spoke about the extraordinary team effort that saved lives after a mass shooting and fire at a Grand Blanc Township church over the weekend. Several of our hospital's medical residents went to the church and were with their kids when it happened. "What really turned us was not only the age and severity but also the connection. We were treating our own, which is always a little harder," Dr. Ross said. "Some of (the medical residents) acted with heroics to bring people out of the fire. So, this is deeply personal to our community, not just our hospital," Dr. Ash said. Watch the press conference on WXYZ-TV to learn more: https://bit.ly/4nYiJKF

Our Henry Ford Hospital nursing excellence council recently delivered over 1,000 gently used scrubs – generously donated by our team members - to the Pope Francis Center in Detroit! These scrubs will support individuals in need, offering clean scrubs to wear while their own items are being freshly laundered at the center. A special thank you to Madelyn Torakis, our director of nursing excellence & Magnet program, for organizing this effort to help support our local community! We’d also like to recognize Dr. William Conway, former Henry Ford Medical Group CEO, who volunteers at the center and helped connect our Detroit hospital nursing team to make this donation possible.

As medicine becomes more precise, leaders in pharmacy are playing a pivotal role in integrating genomic tools into everyday clinical care. Ericka Ridgeway, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, BC-ADM, director of our Pharmacy, Population Health and Ambulatory Clinical Services, shared with Becker's Healthcare how pharmacogenomics integrated into pharmacy operations is helping providers identify patients who may benefit from testing in oncology, cardiology, primary care and behavioral health. "For example, in GI oncology, we’ve added pharmacogenomic testing to all treatment plans involving certain chemotherapy drugs. This helps us identify patients with an enzyme deficiency that could make those drugs life-threatening. In cardiology, patients who have suffered a heart attack can undergo pharmacogenomic testing to better personalize their antiplatelet therapy, reducing the risks of bleeding and drug failure and improving access to high-cost medications," she said.
