Kiva is on a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive.

About us

Kiva (www.kiva.org) expands financial access to help underserved communities thrive. An international non-profit, we serve the financially excluded, especially underbanked women, refugees and communities impacted by forced displacement, climate-vulnerable people and systemically marginalized communities in the United States. By connecting people through crowdfunded loans, Kiva puts the power of financial inclusion in all our hands. Since 2005, the Kiva community has raised over $2 billion in loans, reaching over 5 million people in 84 countries. Kiva’s team is made up of 100+ employees and 450+ volunteers across the world, with offices in San Francisco, Nairobi, Bangkok, and Bogotá.

“My belief is that the world’s problems are not unsolved, they’re just unfunded, and we need to figure out how we get the money there.” Earlier today, Kiva CEO Vishal Ghotge delivered this mic-drop moment on stage at Clinton Global Initiative in NYC. At Kiva, we see every day how access to capital unlocks solutions already being built by entrepreneurs, social enterprises, and communities worldwide. The ideas exist. The innovation exists. What’s missing is the funding. And we're changing that one crowdfunded loan at a time on Kiva.org.

📉 📊 Impact investors are finding new ways to deepen their impact, and offering capacity-building support is a key strategy. Reports show a clear connection between capacity-building and better outcomes in financial inclusion. At Kiva, we believe that helping our investees — both microfinance institutions (MFIs) and social enterprises — become stronger organizations doesn't just benefit them, it also leads to better results for the individuals they serve. Let's break it down: Capacity Building 101 👇

We're so excited to announce that Kiva *just* won Gold at the Global Good Finance Awards in the Financial Education + Inclusion category! Longtime Kiva staff member, David Kitusa, was on hand to accept the award at the ceremony in London. Gratitude for this award extends to all Kivans, from lenders, borrowers, and volunteers, to partners, donors, and staff... Our work is made possible thanks to your continued support of our mission, and we can't wait to see what we can do together next. Thank you to the Global Good Awards for this amazing recognition!

Across the country, small business owners with strong ideas and community roots are being held back by financial systems that weren’t built for them. Many don’t have access to credit or face systemic barriers due to race, gender, geography, or other factors. Banks want to help, but without the right tools, they cannot reach the entrepreneurs who need capital the most. That’s where Kiva comes in. Read more 👇:

Is your storytelling helping or harming your philanthropy? In the social impact sector, storytelling can connect stakeholders, whether donors, supporters, customers, staff, volunteers, or the general public, to impact. But too often, stories are told in ways that unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes or diminish the agency of the people at the heart of the work. Learn about ethical storytelling in philanthropy from Anna Titulaer, Kiva's Executive Vice President of Partnerships and Communications, and Tara Todras-Whitehill, an award-winning storyteller and founder of TW Storytelling Agency. “We don’t just tell stories about people, we tell stories with them.” Read more 👇:

🌍 Investing in women transforms entire communities: An independent survey of 14,500 Kiva borrowers shows that when women access financial services, they invest in their families and communities, creating lasting change. Here’s how: ✅ 88% of women use their loans to start, expand, or invest in a business, compared to 81% of men. ✅ Globally, 73% of women stated that they are better able to cover emergency expenses, while 71% said their ability to save has increased, compared to 62% of men. ✅ Women in rural areas often face additional financial barriers and gender disparities, yet those served by women-centric financial institutions see even greater benefits, with 84% reporting increased respect within their communities.
