About us
In 1975, Tim Barnard moved to Montana with an idea that he could start his own construction company. He had $1,000, two shovels, a pick, and all of his worldly possessions in the cab of his pickup. His grandmother loaned him $3,500 to cover his first bond on a $17,000 project. Since then, he’s never looked back. Today, Barnard is a large heavy-civil construction company with projects worldwide. People building for People. That's what we do at Barnard. Whether we're raising a dam in Alaska, constructing a reservoir in Texas, tunneling under downtown San Francisco, repairing a penstock in British Columbia, or strengthening and improving the integrity of a natural gas pipeline in a Sacramento suburb, our people arrive at our projects with a determination to do the best for their communities and be the best in the industry. Our work also encompasses hydropower, power transmission, marine, water and sewer pipeline, and environmental construction. Most often our projects include several of these elements. They always present a challenge. They affect our neighbors as well as our families. We live where we work, so we come to know our projects personally. We build for People.

Barnard reposted this
Northern Water's Chimney Hollow Reservoir is almost complete! The hardworking Barnard crews have placed the last of the asphalt core and rock fill. Why an asphalt core? Every earthen dam needs an impermeable and flexible core, typically clay. But this site didn’t offer suitable material, so asphalt entered the chat. WALO Bertschinger has used a special machine to build the core in layers, about one foot per pass. The core is 3.3 feet at the base and 2 feet at the top, with a total height of about 350 feet. Thanks to the oily properties of the asphalt (WAY different than a road), the core will stop water, which will collect through engineered drainage systems. With the ten million yards of rock surrounding the core, this dam will store water for Colorado’s Front Range for future generations!
