“Some potential philanthropists feel paralyzed by precedent, some by the plethora of choice.” — Sharna Goldseker A big thank-you to Brown Advisory for hosting this powerful conversation yesterday and inviting BCF President & CEO Shanaysha Sauls to join Sharna Goldseker, founder of 21/64 for a conversation about the barriers and entry points to giving. And special thanks to moderator Allison Brill for creating space for honest insights and shared learning. Key takeaways from the discussion: 👉 Many potential givers feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin; aligning values with action helps unlock meaningful philanthropy. 👉 Younger philanthropists are seeking more grassroots impact, while longtime donors remain steady supporters for institutions. Both strengthen Baltimore in distinct ways. 👉 Donor-advised funds (DAFs) originated in community foundations to expand access to community-centered philanthropy. 🔗 Regardless of age, experience, or barriers, giving through BCF can simplify your giving and amplify your impact. There is real momentum building in Baltimore, and you could feel it in the room yesterday. ⚡️ Members of BCF’s leadership team, including President and CEO Shanaysha Sauls, V.P. of Philanthropy Ashley Mancinelli, and A.V.P. of Marketing and Communications Becky Eisen, spent yesterday morning at the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Vision 2035 gathering. Business leaders, nonprofits, elected officials, and regional partners came together to explore what it takes to create a thriving Baltimore. Events like this highlight the passion, collaboration, and possibility that make our city so special. BCF is proud to be part of this work and to champion a stronger future for our region. Baltimore has always been shaped by leaders who see possibilities where others see challenges. In her recent Baltimore Business Journal column, BCF President & CEO Shanaysha Sauls calls on our business community to embrace civic leadership as an opportunity to strengthen the city we share. At BCF, we’re seeing this momentum grow—but it’s not enough yet. Baltimore is at an inflection point, and the next generation of civic leaders will define what comes next. If you’re in a position to lead, Baltimore needs you now. https://lnkd.in/ergc7s3t

Baltimore is strong, in its people, its communities, and its history. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are one of these strengths, bringing bold ideas to life, launching businesses that create opportunity in neighborhoods and bolster the region’s economy. In this video, hear from Jay Nwachu, President and CEO of Innovation Works Baltimore and Ignite Capital (a BCF Impact Investee), and Dr. Jeanelle Spencer, owner of ZEHBRAS Fitness Club and an Ignite Capital portfolio business, about how BCF and its partners are building on those strengths. They share how supporting small businesses through programs that provide funding for historically underserved entrepreneurs helps fuel innovation, create opportunities, and strengthen Baltimore’s communities.

On #GivingTuesday, we’re bringing together the voices of BCF staff and board members in one video that highlights the many reasons and perspectives behind philanthropy and giving back. Their motivations may differ, but a shared commitment to strengthening our community connects them all. What will their stories inspire in you?

We’re proud to have Byron as a member of our Professional Advisor Recognition Society and Investment Committee. His insights on creating a charitable portfolio and balancing long-term support with flexible giving are a great reminder that thoughtful planning can make a meaningful impact for the causes you care about as well as your year-end tax strategy.
Throughout my career, I've always considered the month of November as "Charitable Awareness Month”, which means it's an ideal time to make a plan to reach your charitable and tax planning goals for 2025. A good way to accomplish this is to create a charitable giving budget using your marginal income tax rate. Step Two: Design a charitable portfolio which is a mix of your favorite nonprofits and causes that you care about. Highlight what percentage goes to charities you plan to support long-term with the majority of the portfolio, leaving the rest of your charitable giving for emergency response donations or one-off charity events. These are just a few ideas as you prepare to maximize your end of the year tax planning and charitable giving goals. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss strategies that may work for you: https://lnkd.in/ez_uKjf8 Baltimore Community Foundation Baltimore Civic Fund Central Florida Foundation
