Construction has officially begun on the new Austin Convention Center facility! While demolition of the existing facility continues, crews have now begun diaphragm wall (D-wall) activities, the critical first step of true structural construction. “This milestone signifies more than construction—it represents years of community collaboration, thoughtful analysis, and broad public engagement,” ACCD Director Trisha Tatro said. “We are building more than just a venue—we’re building Austin’s future. The Austin Convention Center demolition is halfway complete and sustainability is leading the charge with the rebuild! The focus on reusing materials reduces the environmental impact of construction while preserving pieces of Austin’s civic identity, here's some of the key players: 🌱 Structural steel from the original building is being reused to reduce waste and the need for new materials 🌱Pohl metal panels from the current Convention Center’s exterior will be cleaned, restored, and given a new role in the new design 🌱Jamie Carpenter’s blue art glass will return in the new building, integrated into public spaces as a reminder of the center’s history and artistic legacy. 🌱 Additional materials, like concrete, wood, and interior finishes, are being repurposed in the new Convention Center and other city projects. Will This Be the Greenest Convention Center on the Planet? PCMA Convene interviews Principal Leonardo da Costa from LMN Architects and Principal Joshua Coleman from Page, where they discuss the design of the new Austin Convention Center Redevelopment. “The standards set by the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) zero-carbon certification program are some of the most stringent and ambitious in the world. Living Future’s aim is not just to create energy-efficient structures that reduce the environmental costs to operate them, but, according to its website, are a positive force for climate response. “To date, 122 buildings around the world have registered as having followed ILFI zero-carbon certification standards, but only 11 have been certified, including the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. It’s a high bar, said Leo da Costa, a principal at the Seattle-based LMN Architects, which is designing the redevelopment of the Austin Convention Center now underway in Texas, along with Page, a global architecture and engineering firm.
