Eliot Pence and I wrote an article about the principles of an acquisition system designed for attritable systems. We are seeing an evolution in acquisition across the national security community when it comes to these types of systems. A focus on delivery, designing for scale and rapid and continuous competition. But we need a revolution not evolution. We need to move faster. This article is a blueprint for reform. https://lnkd.in/e58f_esN

Anduril had the honor of co-hosting 2,000+ participants in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at The Ohio State University. “We climb these stairs to honor the firefighters that climbed, police who ran into chaos, and civilians turned heroes. To remind ourselves that unity and purpose are a national strength, seen everyday in those that choose to serve us and protect us.” - Zachary Mears, Anduril SVP of Strategy

In three years, in partnership with the Australian Navy, Anduril Industries designed the Ghost Shark XL Autonomous Undersea Vehicle, built a team of hundreds of people that delivered three operational prototypes on budget and one year ahead of schedule, logged thousands of hours in testing at and under the sea, stood up a modern large-scale manufacturing facility in Sydney, and are now transitioning to full-rate production of a cutting-edge sovereign defense capability via a $1.7 billion procurement contract. All in three years. Australia has a lot fewer people, a lot less money, and most of the same bureaucratic challenges as the United States. And yet the Australian government has done in three years what the United States has failed to do in more than twice the time and many times the amount of money spent. Australia has already delivered more, and more capable, XLAUVs than the United States (each at a fraction of the cost per boat), with dozens and dozens more now set to begin rolling off the production lines over the years to come. Here’s a crazy idea: maybe the United States should stop throwing good money after bad on its own XLUUV program and should instead just buy what Australia has already delivered. Maybe we could even say thank you. https://lnkd.in/e9jdCCC9
