  • This September, our chapter at Colegio de Bachilleres de Tabasco Plantel 28 in Villahermosa, Mexico, explored how nature itself can heal the planet. Through their mycoremediation project using Pleurotus ostreatus (the oyster mushroom), they demonstrated how fungi can naturally and sustainably clean contaminated soils — offering a biological solution to pollution and environmental degradation. Over several days, the team led presentations and children’s workshops, both virtually and in person, engaging over 100 participants and inspiring others to see how science and community action can work together to protect our planet. At Climate Cardinals, we believe that climate education is the foundation for climate action. Projects like this show how youth across the world are applying science to real environmental challenges — transforming awareness into impact and hope into change. 💚 Want to join or start a chapter in your community? Off to three weeks of travel! The calendar ahead is full — meetings, panels, and partner visits — but what stands out most right now isn’t where I’m headed. It’s who I’m leaving behind for a little while. At Climate Cardinals, I’m constantly reminded that leadership isn’t about being in every room. It’s about building a team that leads with care, trust, and purpose—no matter who is in the room. Culture isn’t shaped by big moments; it’s built in the in-between — the small check-ins, the shared laughter, the way people show up for one another when no one’s watching. Those moments make the work meaningful. They make it sustainable. You’ll know when you’ve found your next long-term gig. Get yourself a team you’ll miss!

This past summer, our Pwani University Chapter in Kenya brought together over 100 young people for a beach cleanup at Kilifi’s Mazingira Park — collecting 130 kilograms of plastic waste from the coastline. In partnership with BMG, Kenya Red Cross Youth, and Jijenge Youth Initiative, this effort was more than just a cleanup. It was a reminder of what happens when young people come together to protect our shared home — driving marine conservation, building a thriving blue economy, and advancing climate action from the ground up. At Climate Cardinals, we believe that local leadership drives global impact. Our chapters, like Pwani University’s, are creating real change in their communities — translating awareness into action and showing that youth-led climate solutions start with us. 💚 Want to join or start a chapter in your school or community? Climate Cardinals in the Nonprofit Quarterly! 🌎 Grateful to Nonprofit Quarterly (NPQ) and Anmol Irfan for highlighting Climate Cardinals in their latest piece on one of the hidden barriers to climate action — language. Wildfires, floods, and heatwaves have dominated headlines this year, but while climate change affects everyone, it doesn’t affect us all equally. Communities without access to timely, understandable information face greater risks — from missed disaster alerts to exclusion from policymaking. At Climate Cardinals, we strengthen community resilience to climate change through language access and youth empowerment. By translating millions of words into 100+ languages and training young leaders around the world, we’re helping ensure everyone can share ideas, collaborate, and lead. As our COO, Carl Philip Dybwad, shared with NPQ: “We want to give more opportunity to people who are grassroots and on the ground and ask ourselves, ‘Are we the best person to talk about this, or is there someone local who can better speak about this?’” Because the climate movement grows stronger when everyone has a voice — and every voice can be understood.

At 24, I lectured at UNC Chapel Hill's Business School this week! The topic was fundraising — but what we really talked about was trust. Because fundraising isn’t just about writing grants or making pitches. It’s about building relationships that last. It’s about how you show up for people, how you communicate your mission, and how you make others feel seen in the process. You can have the perfect proposal, but at the end of the day, relationships move things forward. Grants are often rejected. Funders change priorities. Timing doesn’t always align. But trust — when it’s real — has a way of circling back. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way: 💬 Every grant is an introduction. Even if you don’t get funded, someone new has learned about your work. They might remember you when the right opportunity comes along. 🤝 Relationships come first. Follow up, express gratitude, and check in when you don’t need anything. The most meaningful partnerships grow slowly and genuinely. ❤️ Connection before conversion. The best fundraising conversations aren’t performances — they’re shared reflections on values, purpose, and possibility. At Climate Cardinals, nearly every long-term partnership started from a small, human moment: a shared belief, a message that resonated, a conversation that mattered. Fundraising isn’t just about asking for support. It’s about creating the kind of trust that makes people want to join you. Thanks again to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Sonali Ratnasinghe, and Jenna Haugen for having me!

First American woman president? I wouldn’t bet against it. 🌟 Weekly Shoutout: Emma Shockley, Chief Programs Officer at Climate Cardinals Emma’s only been here two months — and has already raised the bar for what’s possible. Within weeks, she not only finalized our fellowship curriculum but built out an entire year of programming that feels both thoughtful and practical — the kind of foundation most teams spend months refining. She also streamlined our chapters onboarding process, creating a clear and sustainable system to help us understand which chapters are active and how best to support them. That clarity is already making our global work stronger and more connected. Emma has this rare ability to hold the big picture and the details at the same time — turning complex challenges into simple, actionable steps that move us forward. But what really stands out is her steadiness, care, and drive to make everything she touches better. Whatever she sets her mind to — I know she’ll get there.
