Today is International Day of Older Persons! 🎉 To mark the occasion, ILC has published a new report exploring the state of healthy ageing and prevention across the EU. The report highlights the critical role of preventive health interventions—like influenza vaccination—in helping older people live healthier, longer lives. 📊 Key findings include: ✅ Between 2019 and 2022 we saw a widening in life expectancy outcomes between West and East Europe (Figure 1) ✅ Since 2019, the EU population has been living shorter, less healthy lives in societies that are also less environmentally sustainable. Yet, despite becoming wealthier and more productive, overall happiness levels have remained unchanged. (Figure 2) 📖 Curious how your country compares? We talk about ageing populations as though they are a problem for the future. But the fiscal and social pressures are here 𝗻𝗼𝘄 - and so are the opportunities. In the closing episode of the current season of 'Beyond Curious with LCP', I sat down with Ben Franklin, Deputy CEO of the International Longevity Centre - UK, to unpack: 🔹 Why demographic change is already shaping Treasury decisions 🔹 How longer, healthier lives could transform our economy 🔹 The retirement consumption puzzle - why people save, but don’t spend 🔹 What a truly longevity-friendly UK would look like Ben makes a powerful case that ageing isn’t just a challenge to manage, but a chance to unlock prosperity – if we act. 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/e4F3zwDr I hope listeners have found this series interesting. It would be great to hear your feedback and suggestions. What did you learn? #AgeingPopulation #Longevity #Demographics

We’ve been delighted by the huge amount of interest in the upcoming launch of the APPLE-Tree dementia prevention project at the House of Lords on 21 October. The APPLE-Tree study, led by Queen Mary University of London, explores how to support people with memory concerns to make lifestyle changes that reduce their risk of developing dementia. As our population ages, prevention has never been more important. Due to the high number of registrations, the event is now at full capacity. You can still register to be added to the waitlist here https://lnkd.in/eQxJ3mdx. And we are committed to ensuring that the findings from this six-year study are shared widely. We will be disseminating the key insights after the event, so please stay tuned for updates. A big thank you to everyone who has shown such strong support for dementia prevention, showing just how vital this work is.

The UK’s social care system is at a tipping point 🚨 By 2040, nearly one in four people in the UK will be over 65. Demand for care is rising rapidly, yet millions of older and working-age adults are already missing the support they need. The system relies heavily on unpaid carers, whose contribution now equals the entire NHS budget, and thousands of hospital beds remain blocked each day due to lack of suitable care. The upcoming Casey Review offers a crucial opportunity to rethink social care and deliver long-term, sustainable reform. Our new paper, in collaboration with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, highlights key recommendations, including: ✅ Sustainable funding: central government responsibility to ensure consistency ✅ Fair access for all: standardised eligibility, community and home-based services ✅ A stronger workforce: professionalisation, clear pay and career pathways, and support for skills shortages ✅ Support for unpaid carers: respite, financial protection, and a National Carers Strategy ✅ Better integration and navigation: improved coordination across health, care, and voluntary sectors, and guidance for families ✅ Prevention first: invest in preventative interventions and planning for future needs Together, these reforms and others found in our paper could move social care beyond piecemeal fixes, ensuring dignity, independence, and wellbeing for everyone who relies on it. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/etpKqP3p
