Yesterday Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) confirmed that data has been compromised following a cyber attack on the company last week. The breach, which has severely disrupted the automaker's vehicle production and retail operations, underscores the escalating cybersecurity risks confronting global car makers. As connected cars grow in popularity, incidents like this don’t just slow production they give consumers pause and could lead to slower adoption of connected car technologies. Our Consumer and OEM Research earlier this year, highlighted that 49% of car users across the US, Germany, Japan and the UK worry about being hacked. Cyber attacks such as that sustained by JLR means this figure will only increase. To address this automakers need to adopt a multi-faceted approach. Day 1 & 2 at IAA MOBILITY: It’s been a tumultuous year for European automakers, a fact acknowledged by the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at IAA yesterday. In his opening address of this year’s Munich car show, the Chancellor, called for innovation if car makers are to combat U.S. tariffs and rising Chinese OEM competition. It’s a gauntlet that’s been picked up by German automakers, who are focusing heavily on EVs and technology upgrades at this year’s event. VW’s ID Cross — pitched as an affordable electric SUV — is part of Volkswagen’s push to strengthen its electromobility dominance in Europe. There’s also plenty of buzz around the BMW Group stand where the iX3 — part of their Neue Klasse range and a vehicle which BMW built an entirely new factory for — is on show. Meanwhile, mobility company MOIA — owned by Volkswagen Group — has been showcasing ride-pooling services. Their high-profile panel discussion on autonomous mobility and their showcasing of the ID. Buzz AD highlights VW's push into autonomous transport and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS). It also follows yesterday’s announcement by Volkswagen that they will invest up to a billion euros in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030. Of course there are many Chinese brands on show too. In fact, 100 Chinese companies are in attendance at this year’s event. Earlier this week EV manufacturer XPENG announced its plans to launch its mass-market Mona series in overseas markets next year — proof that the battle between European and Chinese OEMs shows no signs of abating. And, after all that, for those looking for a little light relief, there’s always a life-sized McLaren on show….made of Lego. Mobile network outages can disrupt the connectivity of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), leading to loss of real-time data exchange, navigation and over-the-air updates. The result? Poor vehicle performance, reduced safety features and frustrated drivers. But that doesn't have to be the case. With a managed connectivity platform the impact of network outages can be avoided and potential issues can become strategic assets.
