[Discussion]: Closing down fvwmforums #1232

@ThomasAdam

Hello everyone,

Since FVWM's inception, the primary way of communicating with each other about the project was via its mailing list. In fact, that mailing list is still active today.

In the early-to-mid 2000s, fvwm.lair.be (via theBlackDragon) created the FvwmForums, which still exist today, albeit migrated from phpBB to Discourse.

The usage of the forums probably came around the 2010s, but since then the use of the forums have been in decline. For the past few years since being on Discourse, most of the activities undertaken there are toward spam and bot mitigation.

Very few existing members or new members actually post to the forum, and those that currently do seem to be using it in a very different way to what it was intended, which is becoming irritating to support.

Added to which is the overhead of maintenance of the system in terms of keeping the forums software updated and the underling OS.

I know there's a lot of potentially useful information on the forums, but the majority of it is now mostly in the Wiki, and that's been the place we've been pointing people to.

What I'd like to do is shut the forums down, and for any other community questions or engagement, point people to the Discussions area of this project.

I appreciate I haven't posted this in that forum, but deliberately so, as I want this discussion to be tracked differently.

In terms of a timescale, I'm voting to do this by early November, giving us about a month to elicit feedback -- but at this point, I'm not going to suspect there's going to be much of a compelling reason from any one.

So. With that... thoughts?
