Note: The topics property for repositories on GitHub is currently available for developers to preview. To view the topics property in calls that return repository results, you must provide a custom media type in the Accept header:

List repositories for the authenticated user

Lists repositories that the authenticated user has explicit permission (:read, :write, or :admin) to access.

The authenticated user has explicit permission to access repositories they own, repositories where they are a collaborator, and repositories that they can access through an organization membership.

GET /user/repos

Parameters

Name Type Description
visibility string Can be one of all, public, or private. Default: all
affiliation string Comma-separated list of values. Can include:
* owner: Repositories that are owned by the authenticated user.
* collaborator: Repositories that the user has been added to as a collaborator.
* organization_member: Repositories that the user has access to through being a member of an organization. This includes every repository on every team that the user is on.

Default: owner,collaborator,organization_member
type string Can be one of all, owner, public, private, member. Default: all

Will cause a 422 error if used in the same request as visibility or affiliation.
sort string Can be one of created, updated, pushed, full_name. Default: full_name
direction string Can be one of asc or desc. Default: asc when using full_name, otherwise desc

Lists all public repositories in the order that they were created.

Note: Pagination is powered exclusively by the since parameter. Use the Link header to get the URL for the next page of repositories.

POST /user/repos

OAuth scope requirements

When using OAuth, authorizations must include:

  • public_repo scope or repo scope to create a public repository
  • repo scope to create a private repository

Parameters

Name Type Description
name string Required. The name of the repository.
description string A short description of the repository.
homepage string A URL with more information about the repository.
private boolean Either true to create a private repository or false to create a public one. Default: false
visibility string Can be public or private. If your organization is associated with an enterprise account using GitHub Enterprise Cloud or GitHub Enterprise Server 2.20+, visibility can also be internal. For more information, see "Creating an internal repository" in the GitHub Help documentation.
The visibility parameter overrides the private parameter when you use both parameters with the nebula-preview preview header.
has_issues boolean Either true to enable issues for this repository or false to disable them. Default: true.
has_projects boolean Either true to enable projects for this repository or false to disable them. Default: true. Note: If you're creating a repository in an organization that has disabled repository projects, the default is false, and if you pass true, the API returns an error.
has_wiki boolean Either true to enable the wiki for this repository or false to disable it. Default: true.
is_template boolean Either true to make this repo available as a template repository or false to prevent it. Default: false.
team_id integer The id of the team that will be granted access to this repository. This is only valid when creating a repository in an organization.
auto_init boolean Pass true to create an initial commit with empty README. Default: false.
gitignore_template string Desired language or platform .gitignore template to apply. Use the name of the template without the extension. For example, "Haskell".
license_template string Choose an open source license template that best suits your needs, and then use the license keyword as the license_template string. For example, "mit" or "mpl-2.0".
allow_squash_merge boolean Either true to allow squash-merging pull requests, or false to prevent squash-merging. Default: true
allow_merge_commit boolean Either true to allow merging pull requests with a merge commit, or false to prevent merging pull requests with merge commits. Default: true
allow_rebase_merge boolean Either true to allow rebase-merging pull requests, or false to prevent rebase-merging. Default: true.
delete_branch_on_merge boolean Either true to allow automatically deleting head branches when pull requests are merged, or false to prevent automatic deletion. Default: false.

private boolean Either true to create a private repository or false to create a public one. Default: false
visibility string Can be public or private. If your organization is associated with an enterprise account using GitHub Enterprise Cloud or GitHub Enterprise Server 2.20+, visibility can also be internal. For more information, see "Creating an internal repository" in the GitHub Help documentation.
The visibility parameter overrides the private parameter when you use both parameters with the nebula-preview preview header.
has_issues boolean Either true to enable issues for this repository or false to disable them. Default: true.
has_projects boolean Either true to enable projects for this repository or false to disable them. Default: true. Note: If you're creating a repository in an organization that has disabled repository projects, the default is false, and if you pass true, the API returns an error.
has_wiki boolean Either true to enable the wiki for this repository or false to disable it. Default: true.
is_template boolean Either true to make this repo available as a template repository or false to prevent it. Default: false.
team_id integer The id of the team that will be granted access to this repository. This is only valid when creating a repository in an organization.
auto_init boolean Pass true to create an initial commit with empty README. Default: false.
gitignore_template string Desired language or platform .gitignore template to apply. Use the name of the template without the extension. For example, "Haskell".
license_template string Choose an open source license template that best suits your needs, and then use the license keyword as the license_template string. For example, "mit" or "mpl-2.0".
allow_squash_merge boolean Either true to allow squash-merging pull requests, or false to prevent squash-merging. Default: true
allow_merge_commit boolean Either true to allow merging pull requests with a merge commit, or false to prevent merging pull requests with merge commits. Default: true

Create a repository using a template

Note: Creating and using repository templates is currently available for developers to preview. To access this new endpoint during the preview period, you must provide a custom media type in the Accept header:

Creates a new repository using a repository template. Use the template_owner and template_repo route parameters to specify the repository to use as the template. The authenticated user must own or be a member of an organization that owns the repository. To check if a repository is available to use as a template, get the repository's information using the Get a repository endpoint and check that the is_template key is true.

OAuth scope requirements

When using OAuth, authorizations must include:

  • public_repo scope or repo scope to create a public repository
  • repo scope to create a private repository

Update a repository

Note: You can set the visibility of a repository using the new visibility parameter in the Repositories API, and get a repository's visibility with a new response key. For more information, see the blog post.

name string The name of the repository.
description string A short description of the repository.
homepage string A URL with more information about the repository.
private boolean Either true to make the repository private or false to make it public. Default: false.
Note: You will get a 422 error if the organization restricts changing repository visibility to organization owners and a non-owner tries to change the value of private.
visibility string Can be public or private. If your organization is associated with an enterprise account using GitHub Enterprise Cloud or GitHub Enterprise Server 2.20+, visibility can also be internal. The visibility parameter overrides the private parameter when you use both along with the nebula-preview preview header.
has_issues boolean Either true to enable issues for this repository or false to disable them. Default: true.

List contributors

Lists contributors to the specified repository and sorts them by the number of commits per contributor in descending order. This endpoint may return information that is a few hours old because the GitHub REST API v3 caches contributor data to improve performance.

GitHub identifies contributors by author email address. This endpoint groups contribution counts by GitHub user, which includes all associated email addresses. To improve performance, only the first 500 author email addresses in the repository link to GitHub users. The rest will appear as anonymous contributors without associated GitHub user information.

Delete a repository

Deleting a repository requires admin access. If OAuth is used, the delete_repo scope is required.

Transfer a repository

A transfer request will need to be accepted by the new owner when transferring a personal repository to another user. The response will contain the original owner, and the transfer will continue asynchronously. For more details on the requirements to transfer personal and organization-owned repositories, see about repository transfers.

Create a repository dispatch event

You can use this endpoint to trigger a webhook event called repository_dispatch when you want activity that happens outside of GitHub to trigger a GitHub Actions workflow or GitHub App webhook. You must configure your GitHub Actions workflow or GitHub App to run when the repository_dispatch event occurs. For an example repository_dispatch webhook payload, see "RepositoryDispatchEvent."

The client_payload parameter is available for any extra information that your workflow might need. This parameter is a JSON payload that will be passed on when the webhook event is dispatched. For example, the client_payload can include a message that a user would like to send using a GitHub Actions workflow. Or the client_payload can be used as a test to debug your workflow. To give you write access to the repository, you must use a personal access token with the repo scope. For more information, see "Creating a personal access token for the command line" in the GitHub Help documentation.
