Some of us enjoy fresh, firewood-roasted corn for the taste. We light candles to set a mood. We savor charcoal-grilled fish for the flavor. That’s not true for millions of African families who, in the absence of electricity, rely on firewood, kerosene, candles, and diesel generators for survival. The toxic fumes from these sources cause severe #AirPollution, which is linked to pneumonia, heart disease, respiratory illness, stroke, and lung cancer — leading to 3.2 million deaths globally each year, including an estimated 700,000 in Africa according to the World Health Organization So how do we fix this? That's what we focus on in this new episode of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa's #SustainableAfricaSeries. It features insightful perspectives from Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL); Osayande Igiehon, CEO of Heirs Energies; and Robert Lisinge, ECA Director for Technology, Innovation, Connectivity and Infrastructure. Watch the full episode for more on why the gap persists, the lives and opportunities it costs, and what it will take to deliver change : 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/eaARDdWZ

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was received by the @UN Secretary-General, H.E. @antonioguterres, at UN Headquarters in New York for a bilateral meeting held within the framework of AU–UN cooperation. Their discussions covered a broad range of shared priorities, including UN Security Council reform, reform of international financial institutions, preventive diplomacy, mediation efforts in the DRC & Sudan, funding for peace operations, debt relief, climate financing, food security, & the global trading system. They both reaffirmed their commitment to work in solidarity to advance these priorities. They emphasised Africa’s potential to drive its own growth, underscored the unsustainable nature of Africa’s debt burden, & agreed on the urgency of a just financial architecture, fairer credit ratings, & climate financing. The Chairperson reiterated that Africa, though contributing the least emissions, suffers the most from climate shocks, calling for enhanced financing for adaptation, loss & damage, & a fairer trading order. The bilateral engagement preceded the upcoming AU–EU–UN trilateral meeting.
