🔁 ENS webinar recap: Circular economy in nuclear – turning challenges into opportunities Yesterday, SCK CEN presented two pioneering initiatives during the webinar by European Nuclear Society that are shaping a more sustainable nuclear future: 💡 RECUMO project: A Belgian initiative in collaboration with IRE - Institute for radioelements, tackling radioactive residues from medical isotope production. By converting highly enriched uranium (HEU) into low-enriched uranium (LEU), RECUMO enables safe reuse and reduces proliferation risks. ♻️ Specific clearance: A process within the legal framework that allows materials, which are no longer considered radioactive, to be safely reused, recycled or disposed of through conventional routes. The case-by-case approach supports waste minimization and fosters sustainable disposal routes. 📣 Reach out directly to Didier LEONARD or Sven Boden to continue the conversation. #circulareconomy #RECUMO #sustainability #radiopharmaceuticals #ENSWebinar #specificclearance

#circulaireeconomie #duurzaamheid #verbinden

🎉 Today, Belgium marked a historic milestone in Dessel. 🧱 SCK CEN congratulates ONDRAF/NIRAS Belgian Agency for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials on the official laying of the first stone for the surface disposal facility. ☢️ This is a crucial step toward a safe and sustainable solution for the long-term management of low- and intermediate-level short-lived radioactive waste. 💪 We are proud that our scientific experts have contributed to this achievement; from analyses of geosystems to migration research and radiological environmental impact studies. Hats off to all involved! 👏 🔗 Discover our congratulations and how we’re contributing to this project on our website: https://lnkd.in/eHA8hK6i

🌍 Global deployment of lead-cooled SMRs starts with collaboration! Yesterday at end of the first day of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 69th General Conference in Vienna, the #EAGLES Consortium and nuclear regulators of Belgium (FANC - Federal Agency for Nuclear Control), Italy (ISIN) & Romania (CNCAN - Comisia Națională pentru Controlul Activităților Nucleare) launched an international pre-licensing initiative for the EAGLES-300 reactor. ⚛️ 👏 The signing ceremony was attended by over 120 participants, including IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and the Belgian Minister of Energy Mathieu Bihet, marking a key milestone for the safe, global rollout of advanced nuclear technologies. ✈️ September marks the 69th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna! We are attending, and for the first time, the EAGLES-300 project is making a public appearance with its new branding ⚛️✨ 👏 A quiet debut, but a visible step forward in our international collaboration on EAGLES-300, a lead-cooled next-gen SMR. What do you think? #GC69 #EAGLES #SMR #SMRLFR

Earlier this week the Ecosens-Project was wrapping up with an insightful final conference in Milan under the theme “Futures for Nuclear Energy? Social, Economic and Environmental Considerations". ⚛️ 🤝 The event brought together voices from research, policy, industry and civil society to explore the future of nuclear energy in Europe. SCK CEN was proud to contribute through our social sciences researchers, who led a work package exploring the social dimensions of nuclear energy, including emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors. 💡 🔗 Read the full recommendations: via the link in the comments.

💡 Team Belgium at the EURAD-2 General Assembly! Ten months after its launch, EURAD-2 - the European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management funded by #EURATOM - held its General Assembly in Bologna. ⚛️ Experts from ONDRAF/NIRAS Belgian Agency for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials, BelV, TRACTEBEL and our very own Waste & Disposal Expert Group at SCK CEN are proud to contribute to this strategic European initiative. The programme is evolving, with a stronger focus on strategic studies and an expanded scope that now includes 🟩 surface disposal and 🟨 predisposal (previously tackled in the EU-Project PREDIS) alongside 🟫 geological disposal - marking a more balanced and forward-looking approach. As Belgium’s national programme for radioactive waste management, we play a key role in Europe. 🤝 Through EURAD-2, we help preserve and share knowledge, strengthen international collaboration, and promote efficient use of resources across member states. 🔗 Together, we’re shaping the future of safe and sustainable radioactive waste management in Europe. #EURAD2 #nuclearlifecycle #waste #disposal #research #Belgium
