When Penny, a NAB customer in her 70s, walked into the Burnie branch visibly shaken, NAB Banker Zach Goodwin quickly uncovered the reason: criminals had stolen $15,000 from her account.   “Penny was really distressed when she came into the branch,” Zach said. “She told us she had been on the phone to someone she had thought was from Microsoft who asked her to download some software. Soon after she received a text from NAB that her account was blocked due to suspicious activity. She immediately came into the branch for help.” Thanks to NAB’s Fraud Team, the stolen funds were traced and returned within a week. Remote access scams are a growing threat to Australians, with $2.74 billion lost in 2024 alone. Recovering stolen funds is often complex, says NAB Group Executive Investigations Chris Sheehan. “Often criminals have transferred the money overseas or moved it into crypto and it’s extremely difficult to recover,” Mr Sheehan said. “In this case the money was still in Australia and our Fraud team was able to trace it and return it to Penny.”   Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gTUXCEMh
