Busy week! I just spent the day in DC with Cloudflare’s public sector team at the Nextgov/FCW Quantum Summit. Here are the key takeaways from my presentation on “Post-Quantum Cryptography (PWC) at Internet Scale”: ⚛️ PQC is already running at scale at Cloudflare, including 39% of the human-generated traffic to our network. 🚇 The first phase of your PQC strategy should involve tunneling network traffic over connections that support PQC, especially for traffic traversing the public Internet. That way you get immediate security benefits without needing to upgrade each of your individual systems to PQC, one by one. 🚫 You don’t need specialized hardware or Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to do this. 🚆You can do this now using TLS 1.3 wirh ML-KEM key agreement (without specialized hardware) to protect against attackers that harvest your data now and then decrypt it in the future when better quantum computers are available. 🕺The vendor you are using for tunneling should be building with crypto agility in mind. Because you will need to update these tunnels to support PQC digital signatures (and not just ML-KEM) in order to get ready for active attacks after Q-Day, when better quantum computers are available. ⏳ Once these tunnels are in place, it makes sense to start upgrading individual systems to PQC. NIST is recommending that we get this done by 2030, when RSA and ECDSA are depreciated. So time is short! I’m excited to continue my post-quantum janitorial work at Cloudflare to help the Internet get ready for Q-Day. Lots more to come… #cryptography #pqc
