Position Description
Are you a skilled and collaborative Patent Attorney looking to make a lasting impact in the medical device industry? Join Applied Medical, where for over 35 years we have been developing and manufacturing advanced surgical technologies that transform patient care. As a Patent Attorney, you will play a key role in protecting our innovations by drafting and prosecuting patents in the U.S. and abroad, guiding inventors through the disclosure process, and contributing to strategic portfolio development. Key Responsibilities:
Patent Procurement: Lead hands-on drafting and prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications from start to finish, ensuring timely and accurate filings.
Inventor Collaboration: Mentor inventors through the disclosure process, conduct inventor interviews, and ensure innovations are well-documented and properly protected.
Portfolio Management: Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of assigned patent portfolios, contributing to strategy development and alignment with business objectives.
Patent Counseling: Partner with colleagues to explain portfolio scope and growth strategies, providing clear guidance on intellectual property matters.
Freedom to Operate & Patentability: Conduct thorough assessments, communicate findings effectively, and provide actionable recommendations to stakeholders.
Cross-Functional Support: Collaborate with teams across R&D, Manufacturing, Management, and Corporate Development, building strong relationships and providing strategic IP support.
Position Requirements
Active registration with the USPTO and a proven track record of successful patent preparation and prosecution.
Juris Doctorate (JD) and active membership before a U.S. State Bar.
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Biomedical Engineering.
Minimum of three years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution.
Strong knowledge of USPTO filing practices and docketing procedures (preferred).
Excellent writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts clearly.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
High attention to detail, strong work ethic, and the ability to act with urgency and creativity in problem-solving.

Competitive compensation range: $145,000 - $175,000 / year (California).
