Overview:
The Legal Practice Assistant provides comprehensive administrative and legal support to attorneys in a fast-paced litigation practice. This role is responsible for case management, document preparation, client communication, and coordination of deadlines to ensure smooth handling of litigation matters from initiation through resolution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft, proofread, and format litigation documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, subpoenas, and correspondence.
- File legal documents electronically (e-filing) in state and federal courts, ensuring compliance with court rules and deadlines.
- Maintain and organize case files, including both electronic and physical records.
- Manage attorney calendars, schedule hearings, depositions, meetings, and court appearances.
- Assist with trial preparation, including assembling exhibits, witness lists, trial binders, and coordinating logistics.
- Conduct basic legal research and fact-checking under attorney supervision.
- Communicate with clients, court personnel, opposing counsel, and expert witnesses in a professional manner.
- Track and monitor case deadlines, docketing, and discovery timelines.
- Process billing, time entries, and expense reports related to litigation matters.
- Provide general administrative support, including scanning, copying, and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree, paralegal certificate, or equivalent legal training/experience (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- Prior experience (4-8 years) as a litigation legal assistant or paralegal in a law firm or corporate legal department.
- Strong knowledge of litigation procedures, court rules, and e-filing systems.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
