Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate, full-time opportunity for a Factory Chemist, located at the Croswell Factory, 159 S. Howard St., Croswell, MI 48422.
Job Summary
A Factory Chemist at Michigan Sugar is responsible for management of the Process, Product Quality Assurance, and Environmental Labs. This position requires the ability to perform sugar, by-product and chemical analysis, as well as technical accounting for the sugar process. Analytical wastewater responsibilities include environmental testing and regulatory reporting. The Chemist may be required to assist in Feed and Food Safety Programs which include conducting annual training, inspections and audits for the factory.
Primary Responsibilities
- Analyzing lab data to trouble-shoot process issues for sugar manufacturing and environmental
- Supervising lab personnel
- Factory Quality Assurance Program
- Training and auditing laboratory staff in analytical procedures
- Safety and productivity of the 24-hour, 7-day week laboratory crews
- Inventory control and reporting including physical inspections
- Process control and development
- Assist in the Feed & Food Safety programs (SQF & HARPC)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
- Minimum 10 years experience
- Strong leadership abilities
- Understanding of chemical analysis and quality control
- Able to acquire HARPC, PCQI and SQF certifications
- Good communication skills
- Proficient skills in MS Word and Excel
- Ability to deliver results working within collective bargaining agreement
- People leadership and strong conflict resolution skills
- Ability to quickly problem solve and make decisions
- Demonstrated personal leadership and positive can-do attitude
- Flexible and able to work in fast paced and varying environments

Michigan Sugar Company was founded in 1906 when six smaller sugar companies merged their operations. In 2002, Michigan Sugar Company became a grower-owned cooperative and in 2004, it merged with Monitor Sugar Company to form the company that exists today.
Michigan Sugar Company is headquartered in Bay City and has sugar beet processing facilities in Bay City, Caro, Croswell and Sebewaing. Its nearly 900 grower-owners plant and harvest up to 140,000 acres of sugar beets each year in 17 Michigan counties, as well as Ontario, Canada. Those beets are sliced at the factories and turned into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar annually.
That sugar is sold to industrial, commercial, and retail customers under the Pioneer and Big Chief brands.
Michigan Sugar Company has approximately 1,000 year-round employees and an additional 1,100 seasonal workers. It is the No. 1 employer in Huron County, the No. 2 employer in Bay and Sanilac counties and the No. 3 employer in Tuscola County.
