Davey's Santa Cruz and Richmond Residential/Commercial services offices are doing their part to live Davey's sustainability value through the use of battery-powered tools and a recycling initiative that further benefits the local community. Jaime Merrit, tree care coordinator, Santa Cruz office, and his team are advocates for using battery-powered tools: electric saws, blowers, string trimmers, and hedgers. In addition to their sustainability benefits, he finds them easy to use and handle. “I really like the electric saws. They’re a little bit heavier, but I don’t have to pull a pull cord, and I don’t have to mess with gas. The batteries charge quick enough that I can have two batteries with a charger on site, and just swap them when one runs out.” Codie Martin, foreman, Richmond office, leads a pop top recycling initiative in the office. The pop tops he collects from teammates are donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond. The organization then works with a local recycler to turn the tabs into money that helps fund the charity’s services. “To keep the giving going, we’ve placed two collection houses — one small and one large — around the office. Davey Resource Group, Inc.'s Minnesota and Northern Ohio Environmental Consulting offices are making a difference in the realm of sustainability by collecting rainwater. The Minnesota Davey Resource Group, Inc. office features a 200-square-foot rain garden, which is home to a variety of native plants and is designed to help rainwater infiltrate and reduce runoff. The office driveway is also made of permeable pavers that allow water to infiltrate, also minimizing runoff. Together, these features save money on the city's stormwater fees. DRG’s Northern Ohio Environmental Consulting office, located on Martinel Drive in Kent, relies almost entirely on a rainwater collection system to supply water for filling sprayers and portable tanks, cleaning equipment, and watering plants being stored for future projects. Rainwater is collected from the building’s 20,000 square-foot roof into two 4,100-gallon tanks with a microfiltration system. Senior Associate Consultant Bruce Swanger, who took the initiative to spearhead this project, estimates that these efforts save $7,500 to $9,000 annually by reducing both water costs and labor time. This is what the Davey SEED (Science, Employee Education and Development) Campus's canopy walk offers those who venture 50 feet up into the canopy of this oak grove. This video features what it is like to be up on the canopy walk. The footage in this video was shot while it was still under construction, but it doesn't take away from the magnificence of being up in the treetops.
