UTA Executive Director Jay Fox met with Senator John Curtis, Utah’s Congressional Delegation, and the Federal Transit Administration to advocate for federal support for the FrontRunner Forward (FR2X) project. This generational investment will increase rail capacity, improve reliability, and deliver faster service along the Wasatch Front. We appreciate the continued support of Utah’s delegation as we work to keep our region moving. #RideUTA Jay Fox John Curtis Joshua Van Jura

🚨 New Transit Unplugged Newsletter is live 🚨 What does real preparedness look like in transit? This week, we’re thinking about a bold answer to a big question. In our latest issue, Paul Comfort sits down with Jay Fox, Executive Director of the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), to talk about what it means to tell the International Olympic Committee – IOC: “We’re ready now.” From the 2034 Winter Olympics to day-to-day system performance, it’s a powerful example of proactive leadership and long-range thinking. We’re also thrilled to premiere a new Transit Unplugged TV episode traveling Italy by train — from Milan and Turin to Florence and Rome — exploring high-speed rail, streetcars, trams, and the people shaping mobility across the country. Plus, if you missed it: • Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler U.S., joins us to talk hydrogen trains, U.S. manufacturing, and the future of rail • The latest Transit Unplugged News Minute with Julie Gates, covering stories from Amtrak, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Metropolitan Transportation Authority Metro-North Railroad, Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), and more! Transit is being asked to meet the needs of tomorrow — and the best systems aren’t waiting to catch up. They’re already ready. #TransitUnplugged #PublicTransit #Mobility #TransitLeadership #UrbanMobility #Rail #BRT #ThinkTransit #TransportationPlanning #FutureOfTransit

UTA extends our sincere appreciation to Congressman Mike Kennedy for introducing the House companion bill to Senator Mike Lee’s Streamlining Transit Projects Act. This legislation represents a meaningful step toward improving project delivery timelines and ensuring Utah’s transit infrastructure can keep pace with the state’s rapid growth. The bill strengthens local decision-making, preserves rigorous environmental standards, and allows agencies like UTA to move critical projects forward more efficiently by allowing transit agencies to manage their own environmental review process under the National Environmental Policy Act. As UTA Board Chair Carlton Christensen noted, “This legislation preserves the rigorous environmental standards, while giving agencies the flexibility to move forward more efficiently. We appreciate Congressman Kennedy’s leadership in introducing this important bill in the House of Representatives.” We are grateful for Congressman Kennedy’s support of public transit and for championing tools that help us better serve Utahns. We also extend our thanks to our federal partners and consultants in Washington, D.C. for their continued advocacy on UTA’s reauthorization priorities. Together, we’re working to deliver a stronger, more responsive transit future for Utah. https://lnkd.in/gNFEKTtY.

Thank you to U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) for introducing the Streamline Transit Projects Act. This bipartisan legislation, cosponsored by Senator John Curtis (R-UT), Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA), is an important step toward improving the efficiency and responsiveness of transit development in fast-growing states like Utah. In the face of continued, rapid population growth, it has never been more urgent to reduce development timelines by allowing transit agencies like UTA to take responsibility for the environmental impact of transit projects. The Streamline Transit Projects Act will enable UTA to be more nimble in responding to growing transit needs and better serve Utahns who rely on UTA for daily transportation. Thank you to Sens. Lee, Curtis, Kelly, and Warnock for advancing a solution-oriented approach that strengthens mobility, supports economic growth, and enhances the ability of transit agencies to deliver critical projects for the communities we serve.
Today, U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced bipartisan legislation to improve transit project timelines and quality by restoring the responsibility for environmental reviews back to state agencies from the federal government. The Streamline Transit Projects Act is cosponsored by U.S. Senator John Curtis (R-UT), Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and endorsed by Utah Transit Authority, Wasatch Front Regional Council, and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). "APTA strongly supports the bipartisan Streamline Transit Projects Act, and commends Senators Lee, Warnock, Curtis, and Kelly for their leadership in advancing a smart, commonsense solution that will strengthen mobility nationwide. This legislation brings long-overdue modal parity by providing public transit agencies with the same authority long afforded to our highway partners. Empowering transit agencies to approve their own categorical exclusions will cut red tape, speed project delivery, and help communities realize the benefits of better public transportation sooner. Public transit agencies have the skilled environmental professionals needed to do this work and it is long-past time to give them this opportunity." – Paul Skoutelas, President and CEO, APTA. https://lnkd.in/eHYc_Rs6

Without properly maintained track and signal equipment, a train cannot run safely, which is why the work of Maintenance of Way is vital to the UTA system. In an effort to better train and prepare railway workers, UTA has launched a Maintenance of Way Signal Apprenticeship Program. This program offers hands-on training on the basic and advanced functions of electronics, grade crossings, and interlockings that make up UTA's system. #RideUTA

At the Utah Transit Authority, our customers are part of a clean air movement. With over 40 million boardings across our system last year, people across the Wasatch Front are choosing to lower their emissions by taking a safe and efficient public transportation option. Plus, UTA has recently added 38 electric buses to the fleet and is working to implement a comprehensive Zero-Emissions Bus Transition Plan. Our work on clean air is just beginning. #rideuta Congratulations to the Utah Clean Air Partnership - UCAIR team. Let's keep up this momentum for the health of our communities. https://lnkd.in/gTkycagA
