Sometimes you need to go the extra mile to report a story. For an article published by Richmondside this week about a nonprofit that provides support to people as they come home from incarceration, Thomas Lyons, a rising senior at Wesleyan University, and one of our summer reporting interns, not only spent many hours interviewing the men who staff the Safe Return Project — themselves formerly incarcerated — he also played pick-up basketball with some of the group's youth members. The result is a thoughtful, sensitive story that brings home the challenges of reentry and breaking the recidivism cycle. #localnews #nonprofitnews #journalisminternships #richmondca https://lnkd.in/gH9RGDwW

We're thrilled to announce that Richmondside's weekly newsletter, the Richmondside Report, just passed 5,000 subscribers, just a couple of weeks after Richmondside marked its first anniversary. At the beginning of 2025, we set 5,000 as our goal for the year. It's a great tribute to the Richmondside team — Kari Hulac, Joel Umanzor and Jana Kadah — who are doing the journalism their city needs and wants. And kudos to Alejandra Armstrong and Andrew Weiler in, respectively, our audience and advertising teams, who have been working hard getting the word out about the newsletter. Through this work, we're learning a lot about newsletter subscriber acquisition that we will apply across our Cityside newsrooms, as well as with peers in the wonderful nonprofit local news ecosystem! https://lnkd.in/gthmVMnS

Want to get involved in your community and play a key role in ensuring local news reflects the needs and concerns of residents? Richmondside is looking to work with 3-4 people as “community listeners” this winter, to conduct in-person interviews with other residents about how they’re being impacted by environmental pollution in Richmond and learn what other issues matter to them most, to guide our future reporting. This is a temporary contract position for January and February that is part-time and flexible. You will be paid $2,500 to complete the project. “Not only did people ask for nitty gritty hard-hitting news stories, they indicated that they wanted more ways to find out how they can enjoy their city." —Our Editor-in-Chief Kari Hulac spoke with Jackie Krentzman for Western City Magazine about what we heard from Richmond residents before launching Richmondside four months ago. The story reports on journalism-driven initiatives to increase local news coverage and describes Richmondside's parent nonprofit news organization, Cityside, as a "successful model." #localnews #nonprofitjournalism #richmondca https://lnkd.in/gxbKTMhn
