This 10/9, MIT.nano has unveiled a collection of nanoStories, brief snippets that tell how everyday experiences are shaped by what happens when things get really (really) small. Einstein's revolutionary equation about the equivalence of matter and energy (E=mc²) was published on this day, 27 September 1905. For centuries, scientists thought that energy and mass were entirely unrelated to each other. However, Einstein's equation showed that energy and mass are different forms of the same thing. Under the right conditions, mass can become energy, and energy can become mass. Einstein was awarded the 1921 ‪Nobel Prize‬ in Physics "for his many contributions to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."
