Celebrating Filipino-American History Month: Pets are Family 🇵🇭❤ This October, to honor Filipino-American History Month (FAHM), we're sharing a beautiful reflection from our Communications Manager, Johanna Casao, on her journey to truly embrace the belief that pets are family. Growing up in a Filipino-American household, Johanna experienced a unique perspective on animals shaped by her parents' immigrant experiences — from traumatic encounters with street animals in the Philippines to the historical role of dogs as working or guarding animals. Though her parents were hesitant at first, and her dogs Apollo and Orion started out as outside pets, her father became meticulous with their care and training. As Johanna shares, it took time, patience, and commitment to understand her parents' cultural norms and fears. But eventually, the deep love they all felt proved that: "Pets are family, and family can appear in our lives and adapt alongside us, in ways we never thought possible." This FAHM, we celebrate the powerful, evolving bond between people and pets, and the many different cultural paths that lead to unconditional love. SURVIVOR STORY (content warning): It wasn’t until an abuser held a gun to her head and threatened to kill her that Melanie* left. With the help of law enforcement, she and her two dogs, Kiki* and Mochi*, left the abusive home behind and went to a domestic violence shelter. A RedRover Relief Safe Escape grant provided the funding for Kiki and Mochi's temporary, safe boarding. This allowed Melanie to focus on her healing, knowing her beloved pets were secure. "Safety shouldn't require sacrifice." 💜 This is the driving principle behind Nestlé Purina North America and RedRover’s Purple Leash Project partnership. As Christy Kahn of Purina explains, it's a heartbreaking reality that "almost 50% of survivors are delaying leaving an abusive situation because they can't take their pet with them." Through the Purple Leash Project, we're shining a light on this critical issue and working to make a difference. When this partnership began in 2019, only 10% of domestic violence shelters were pet-friendly. Thanks to our shared mission, and the movement that number has been increased to 19%. For Cynthia, sharing the story of the cat her family helped became a wonderful lesson in empathy for her great-grandchildren. A small act of kindness can change an animal’s life forever. This is the power of our On-Call Angels program! 🐾 Take one-year-old cat, Momo. When he was severely injured in a fight, a kind college student stepped up to help him. Thanks to a grant funded by an On-Call Angel participant named Cynthia, Momo got the surgery he needed right away.
