Last week, Matrix New World Engineering and Sundance Consultants, LLC had the privilege of attending the 2025 Battelle International Symposium on Bioremediation and Environmental Biotechnology in Boston. This premier event brought together leaders in environmental science, engineering, and biotechnology to explore innovative solutions in site remediation. Our team was proud to contribute to impactful discussions on PFAS treatment, advanced site characterization, remediation in complex geology, sustainable strategies, and emerging technologies for 1,4-dioxane treatment. A big thank you to Battelle for hosting such a dynamic and collaborative gathering—and to everyone who joined us for our presentations and discussions. We’re energized by the insights shared and look forward to applying them as we continue delivering smart, science-driven solutions for our clients and communities. #BattelleBio25

Last but certainly not least is Matrix New World Engineering’s Project Engineer, Bridget Hoagland Stamatovski, PE. Bridget has over 11 years of professional experience (9 with Matrix!) providing oversight on environmental remediation projects as well as production well drilling and installation. Bridget manages a variety of projects from permitting and compliance for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s water and wastewater discharge permits to groundwater remediation sites. Recently, Bridget has been working closely with ADEQ to create and implement frameworks for regulatory programs. This is Bridget’s fourth year attending Battelle conferences. Bridget says,” I’m looking forward to learning more about new technologies and approaches in bioremediation, particularly for emerging contaminants. Battelle provides a great opportunity for people to come together from around the world to present on their research and experience in the field.” You can find Bridget at Battelle presenting the platform talk Challenges and Solutions for Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation in Low Permeability Groundwater (session D7). Along with the presentation, Bridget is also a co-author on poster “Enhanced Aerobic Biodegradation of Chlorinated Solvents and 1,4-Dioxane in Groundwater (Session C-1)” and platform “Optimizing Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Ethenes in Groundwater” (Session D1)

Next in our Speaker Highlight series is Sundance Consultants, LLC’s PFAS/Emerging Contaminants Practice Group Leader, Rick Wice, PG, F. SAME who has been attending Battelle conferences for the last 25 years. Rick recently joined Sundance and said, “In these roles I am looking forward to applying my technical knowledge and helping grow True Environmental’s services and market presence.” At Battelle, Rick is on the steering committee helping to develop the technical program. He will also be moderating a panel “In Situ Bioremediation: State of the Practice and Emerging Contaminants Challenges” as well as chairing the session “High Resolution Site Characterization and Conceptual Site Models (CSM)”. Regarding the importance of bioremediation, Rick says, “Bioremediation has become one of the most effective and widely used remediation technologies. It’s history, state of the practice and future will be presented by some of the industry’s leading subject matter experts on the panel. CSM are very important as they are the central processing unit for remediation planning.” Along with PFAS and Emerging Contaminants sessions, you can find Rick at sessions on new and emerging environmental biotechnology. Fun fact: Rick and Laurie LaPat-Polasko are long time colleagues (over 20 years!)

As we gear up for the 2025 Battelle Bioremediation Symposium, we’re excited to launch a short series spotlighting the amazing members who will be presenting their work at this year’s event. First up, Meet Laurie LaPat-Polasko, PhD, QEP, Matrix New World Engineering’s Vice President/National Director of Remediation who has been presenting at Battelle conferences for decades. Laurie specializes in bioremediation technologies for a wide variety of contaminants in water and soil including chlorinated solvents, petroleum compounds, explosives, and emerging contaminants PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. At the conference, Laurie will be very busy (but not too busy to connect!). She is is a co-author on 3 platform presentations:  “Optimizing Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Ethenes in Groundwater” (Session D1),  “Full Scale Enhanced in Situ Bioremediation and Chemical Reduction of Chlorinated Ethenes in Ground Water” (Session D8),  “Challenges and Solutions for Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation in Low Permeability Groundwater” (Session D7) Along with the presentations, Laurie is also a co-author on 3 posters:   “Enhanced Aerobic Biodegradation of Chlorinated Solvents and 1,4-Dioxane in Groundwater (Session C-1)  “Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Ethenes in Groundwater in Complex Hydrogeology” (Session D8) “Optimization of In Situ Bioremediation of Chlorinated Solvents Using Various Substrates and Bioaugmentation” (Session E5) Lastly, Laurie is also Co-Chair with Brad Elkins of Redox for the session 3f ”Impacts of Mixed Contaminants on Biodegradation”. When asked about the importance of bioremediation, Laurie said, “ I am very passionate about our opportunities to use microbes to biodegrade toxic compounds in our environment. I have been a microbe hunter for more than 30 years and am always amazed at the unique enzymes that these microbes are able to produce. They are small but mighty animals!” Along with her own presentations, Laurie will be attending other events and is looking forward to learning about how microbes can attack PFAS compounds and connecting with remediation experts from industry, numerous universities and government agencies.
